Madison Preseason I.D.: Quick Hits

The Madison Preseason I.D. Showcase wrapped up last night at the new GRB Academy in Windsor, WI. The event saw over 200 players take part in the pro style workout in front of the PBR Scouting Staff, like past Madison events the pitching portion stood out the most with many pitchers making jumps in velocity and showing improved secondary offerings. Today we begin the event analysis highlighting some of the top performers.

  • Highly ranked 2018 arms Max Alba (Franklin) and Dillion Nowicki (Stoughton) showed off premium stuff yesterday on the mound. Nowicki sat 90-91 mph with his fastball and threw his curveball for strikes with 10-4 shape and depth at 73-75 mph. Alba, who just finished up his basketball season sat 89-90 topping out at 93 mph with his fastball. Alba showed a vastly improved curveball with late breaking action at 77-80 mph.

  • 6-foot-1, 165-pound 2019 RHP/OF Jack Washburn (Webster) has a quick arm and threw strikes with his fastball sitting 85-86 topping out at 87 mph. The slider is the separator for Washburn showing late breaking action, thrown aggressively at 74-76 mph.

  • The Stefiuk brothers of Green Bay Preble, 2018 RHP Paul (Bradley commit) hides the ball well sitting 87-89 mph with his fastball that has sinking action complimented by a sharp breaking curveball at 74-76 mph. 2020 LHP Ryan is one of the more advanced arms in the class. His fastball worked 83-84 mph with cutting action and showed a plus breaking ball with 1-7 shape and late breaking action with depth at 67-69 mph.

  • 2018 C and Indiana commit Jeff Holtz (Arrowhead) is one of the top hitters in the state with an advanced approach and frame he generates explosive bat speed registering an event best 101 mph exit velocity from a tee. He improved his 60 time running a 6.93, behind the plate he popped a 1.89-2.01 and threw 78 mph from the crouch.

  • Arkansas commit, C/OF Nathan Stevens (Waunakee, 2019) flashed explosive bat speed from the left side of the plate, was 80 mph from the crouch and 90 mph from the outfield.

  • 2018 RHP Jack Brown (Eau Claire Memorial) showed an above-average three-pitch mix and his curveball flashed swing and miss action. Fastball sat 83-86 mph.

  • 2018 LHP Jackson Pothast (Sheboygan North) is a high-upside southpaw with an imposing 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame. Pothast has a loose, quick arm and has feel for a three-pitch mix. His fastball sat 86-87 mph, was thrown for strikes and has heavy action at times.

  • Jacob Schellpfeffer (Mayville) is another 2018 southpaw to keep an eye on. The quick-armed southpaw sat 82-84 mph with three-pitch feel.

  • 6-foot-4, 210-pound Jimmy Juergensen (Living Word Lutheran) is a left-handed hitting, sophomore, first baseman who showed well at the plate. Juergenson has a flat bat path with power potential and consistently found the barrel in BP. Registered an exit velocity of 95 mph.

  • RHP Taylor Jansen (Sun Prairie, 2018) has a strong 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame, a quick arm, fastball up to 86 mph and a firm, sharp cutter at 82-84 mph.

  • Jordan Strick (West De Pere) is a 2018 projectable right-handed arm with a 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame. Quick arm and fastball sat 83-84 mph, touched 85.

  • Five underclassmen who showed advanced hands on the infield were 2019’s Bennett Frazer (Oconto) Tucker Cole (Dixon), Jack Krumbach (Madison Memorial) and 2020’s Zach Storbakken (Sussex Hamilton) Taiten Manriquez (Waunakee).

  • 6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP/INF Andrew Sweetalla (Appleton East) has a long, quick, projectable arm action and ran his fastball up to 84 mph.

  • 2019 LHP Tyler Denu (Mount Horeb) has a sturdy frame, loose arm, three-pitch feel and fastball was up to 83 mph with more in the tank.

  • 2020 SS/RHP Max Wagner (Preble) showed off advanced bat speed during his round of batting practice with consistent hard line drive contact, he also ran  7.13 60-yard dash, threw 82 mph across the infield, and registered 95 mph exit velocity from a tee.

  • 2018 RHP Randon Dauman (Columbus) and Cedric Girard (Oregon) took steps forward with their repertoires at the event. Dauman sat 86-88 topping out at 90 mph and flashed a potential swing and miss curveball at 75-78 mph. Girard sat 85-87 topping out at 88 mph complimented by a sharp breaking curveball at 74-76 mph.

  • 2019 C Drake Baldwin (Madison West) continued to show why he is one of the top backstops in the 2019 Class. Baldwin showed advanced actions behind the plate popping 1.97-2.10 and threw 76 mph from the crouch. At the plate he has fluid rhythm and good balance and consistently barrels up pitches. He is also a plus runner for his position running a 6.98 60 yard dash.
