We knew that No. 7 Simeon (3-0) would have excellent pitching in the 2012 season. Mercy! We didn’t know the Wolverines would be this good. Behind their third consecutive no-hitter, this time by junior RHP Elbert Dunnigan, the Wolverines blanked Corliss 10-0 in five innings. Dunnigan extended the Wolverines staffs’ hitless and scoreless inning streak to 15. Dunnigan struck out 11 of the 15 outs he recorded; an easy day for the Wolverine defense.

The offense was led today by future Iowa Hawkeye, Blake Hickman, who hit a moon-shot with a man aboard, singled, and plated four Wolverine runs. Junior Marshawn Taylor had three hits and an RBI. Louisville-bound, Corey Ray had two hits and two RBI.

No. 26 Mundelein (2-0) won 12-0 in five innings behind a combined no-hitter.Mustang senior Jared Mandel (1-0) fired four hitless innings, striking out 10, to pick up the win. Iowa-bound Ryan Borucki had a pair of doubles for the Mustangs.

No. 47 O’ Fallon (1-0) opened up its season on a high note, as Head Coach Jason Portz’ Panthers blanked Anna-Jonesboro 3-0.

Mt. Vernon (3-0) made it three straight with an impressive 9-3 win at Bethalto Civic Memorial (0-1). Ram’s senior, Zane Xanders, was a long-one short of hitting for the cycle and plated three Ram runs. Senior C, Grant Garrett, had two hits, including a double and drove in a run while senior, Zack Jones, continued his torrid start to 2012 with a couple of hits including a double.

Junior Tyler Ellis (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 quality innings to pick up the win and Jones closed out the game with another quality relief appearance.

Manteno (2-0) dispatched Grant Park (0-1) in the Panthers’ home-opener 14-1in five innings on Thursday. Panther C, Ryan Sample, led the Panther attack with three hits and three RBI. Senior, Billy Liss, had a perfect 2-for-2 day, including a double and senior CF, J.J. Witherow, chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

Panther junior Jason Morgan (1-0) allowed one run and no hits in his three innings of work to pick up the win on the mound. Junior, James Weltmeyer, wrapped up the combined no-hitter, with two hitless innings of relief.

The Panthers travel to Prairie Central on Saturday and will face Streator and Prairie Central.

Palatine (1-0) defeated Highland Park 5-1 behind the Pirates 6-foot-3 RHP Eric Sheuermann (1-0). Sheurmann, who will be heading to Bradley in the fall, allowed one unearned run and one hit over four innings to pick up the win. Sheurmann had eight strikeouts and chipped in with a pair of singles at the plate. 

Crystal Lake South (1-0) opened up its 2012 campaign with an impressive 7-4 victory over No. 33 Rockford Boylan (0-1). The Gators 6-foot-4, 215 pound, junior 1B Max Meitzler, went deep twice and drove in six Gator runs. Senior C Dom Winiecki had a perfect 3-for-3 opener. 6-foot-3 senior Zack Geib (1-0) fired six quality innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Gators.

Lincoln-Way Central (2-1) defeated Marmion 4-2 behind junior Grant Bartell. Bartlell (1-0) homered in the sixth for the game-winner and then fired 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win on the mound for the Knights. Bartlell struck out three Cadet hitters.

Grayslake Central (1-0) spotted Richmond-Burton a 2-0 lead and roared back for a 10-2 win in the Rams season-opener. Ram senior RHP, Mark Ash (1-0), allowed two unearned runs in five innings to pick up the win on the mound. Kristian Meehan led the Rams attack with a 4-for-4 day with a double, triple, and drove home three Ram runs.

Marist (1-0) opened the season with a 1-0 thriller over Stagg on Thursday. Redhawk junior Cody Bohanek had two hits in the Hawks’ season-opener. The second was by the hit-by-pitch variety and forced home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Notre Dame-bound LHP, Mike Hearne (1-0), picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Hearne struck out five.

Champaign Centennial (2-0) won in dramatic fashion on Thursday. Charger freshman Grey Schultz, singled home the tying and winning runs, in the bottom of the seventh, to lead the Chargers past Champaign St. Thomas More 4-3.

Reavis (1-0) smashed Thornwood 15-0 in five innings, behind Ram junior 1B David Beltran, who had a perfect 2-for-2 day with 4 RBI. Junior 3B Anthony Doory also was a perfect 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBI.

Chicago Christian (3-0) dispatched Rich Central 6-3 behind the Knights 6-foot-4, 195 pound, senior SS/RHP Mike Kamp. All Kamp did was go 4-for-4 for the Knights and nail down the save for winning pitcher Josh Novak (1-0).

Vernon Hills (1-0) defeated Waukegan 6-2 behind a one-hitter from junior LHP Tyler Feece (1-0). Feece struck out 11 and allowed two unearned runs in his opening-day masterpiece.

Bremen (1-0) put 20 up on the board in its season opener, defeating St. Francis de Sales 20-4 in five innings. Brave seniors Brandon Ochoa and Niko Garafalo each had perfect 3-for-3 days with three RBI. Junior Jesse Vasquez (1-0) pitched three innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Braves.

Springfield (2-1) slipped past Auburn 4-3 and scored the game-winner on a HBP with the bases loaded in the fifth. Senator senior Tyler Maskey doubled home a Senator tally. Senior Zach Thompson and junior Ryan Door singled home the other Senator runs.

Lisle (1-0) smashed Walther Lutheran 9-0 in the Lions season-opener on Thursday. Lion sophomore Kevin Coppin went deep with the bases full of Lions for the big blow in the game. Senior RHP Kazim Kahn (1-0) fired four scoreless innings with five strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound. The Lions will meet undefeated Chicago Christian (3-0) today in Lisle.

Cary-Grove (1-0) defeated Fremd 11-5 in the Trojans season-opener Thursday. Trojan junior Andrew Brierton homered doubled and plated three Trojan runs. Senior Matt Byrne and junior Jeremy Vasquez each had three RBI for the Trojans.

Mahomet-Seymour (3-0) had outscored its first two opponents 29-1, this season. Victory No. 3 was a little more difficult as the Bulldogs slipped past Oakwood 10-9. Freshman Joe Kenny had three hits to lead the Bulldogs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
