CRESTWOOD, IL – Marian Catholic opened its season with a 9-5 win over No. 7 Mount Carmel on Friday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium. The Spartans got on the board early and the pitching staff worked out of numerous jams to take home the win.

The Spartans set the tone in the top of the first, jumping all over Mount Carmel starter Cameron Hupe. Christian Beal got things started with single and came around to score on an RBI triple from Daniel Gutierrez. Wyell Woods and Nick Bledsoe chipped in with RBIs to make it 3-0 before the Carvan could get to the plate. The Spartans never trailed the whole game.

Marian Catholic starter Mark DiLuia worked out of a bases loaded no out jam in the second inning unscathed. DiLuia, a Maryland commit, worked three innings allowing four hits and one run, while striking out five in his season debut.

Mount Carmel got on the board in the third when Alek Thomas tripled with one out and came around to score on an RBI single by Zion Pettigrew. The Caravan added a run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh but it wouldn’t be enough.

With the bases loaded and two outs Marian reliever Michael Bohlen got Alek Thomas to fly out to right field to end the game.

Wyell Woods finished the game 3-5 with three RBIs for Marian.

Marian Catholic moves to 1-0 on the year host Bradley tomorrow in Chicago Heights. Mount Carmel drops to 2-1 and takes on Lincoln-Way East tomorrow in Frankfort.
