LAGRANGE, IL - In a continuation game from a few weeks back, The No. 5 St. Laurence Vikings defeated The No. 11 Lyons Township Lions in a 9 inning affair by a final score of 3-2. The contest was the final game of the Opening Round in the Do It Stevie’s Way Tournament and resumed play in the 6th inning with a score 2-1 in favor of St. Laurence.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lions second baseman Thomas Remijas lined a double to the left/center gap. Next guy up, Michael Martino then worked back from an 0-2 count to eventually flare a RBI game-tying single to right field, score 2-2.

Lions pitcher Michael Walsh kept a potent Vikings lineup in check for three innings until Matt McCormick (West Virginia commit) delivered a towering two-out, first pitch home run to left/center field putting his team ahead 3-2. McCormick then took the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Matt Piento (Lewis University commit) started a hopeful ninth inning rally delivering a one-out single to left. After a walk and a hit batter, McCormick left the bases loaded inducing a pop-out to first base, Vikings victory. At the plate, the McCormick finished 2-for-4 with a walk and the eventual game-tying home run.

Piento led the Lions at the plate finishing 3-for-5 with three singles.

Walsh took the tough loss allowing two hits in 3.2 innings of work walking none and striking out five. St. Laurence Sophomore RHP Matt Zahora came back into the game he originally started a few weeks prior, pitching a scoreless 6th and 7th inning. He finished with a line: 5.2IP, 2H, 1R/ER, BB, 2K.

Before the rain out, Gage Olszak (Saint Xavier commit) put up the two runs for St. Laurence with a two-run home run. He finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Remijas collected an RBI single to give Lyons their run before the called game. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
