Milwaukee Preseason I.D.: Stats Posted

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

The Milwaukee Preseason I.D. showcase has always put up one of the more impressive stat sheets in our entire coverage area for an open event. This year was no different as more than 100 of the top prospects in the state showed up to strut their stuff.

CLICK HERE for complete list of showcase statistics.

Let’s take a look at all the top performers and stat leaders.

Top 60 Yard Dash

Five players ran sub 7.0 60’s using a laser timing system. Whitnall’s J.T. Reed (2016) topped the list with the fastest 60 at 6.79. Another speedster to keep an eye on is 2018 Jarred Kelenic (Waukesha West) who is already committed to Louisville and is a 6.9 runner who will likely improve that number as he gets older.

The top five infield arms all eclipsed the 85 mph mark which is advanced collegiate arm strength. In all 13 prospects broke 80 mph across the infield, including several underclassmen who project well and are high follows on the infield. Gavin Lux (Indian Trail, 2016) showed off a plus arm on the infield at 89 mph with carry, as well as showing the ability to get rid of it on the run.

The outfield arms were equally impressive and Illinois commit Cyrillo Watson (South Milwaukee, 2016) led the list at 92 mph from a crowhop. T.D. Walker (Milwaukee Lutheran, 2016) had an impressive day capped off with an 89 mph arm and one of the better rounds of BP on the day.

Top Catching Velocities

Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area, 2016) an Arkansas commit has impressed us for years with his physicality, left handed bat and arm strength. He’s made continual strides to refine the finer points of receiving and has turned himself into one of the top catch and throw prospects in the country. Rortvedt showed off the best arm out of the crouch at 83 mph just ahead of recent Western Illinois commit Austin Emanuel (Mukwonago, 2016) at 79 mph. The pair also held the top pop times and the only sub 2.0 times.

Top Exit Velocities

Aaron Goecks again brought one of the more powerful bats to the Milwaukee Preseason I.D. Goecks, a left-handed hitter posted a 93 mph exit velocity from the tee and carried it out to the field with a loud round of BP. Along with Rortvedt at 92 mph, two 2018’s and Louisville commits, Jarred Kelenic and Alex Binelas (Oak Creek) eclipsed the 90 mph mark.

Top Fastball Velocities

At the end of the day the arms took over in impressive fashion. Two arms of note who made jumps since last seeing them were RHP Joe Gahm (Germantown, 2016) and RHP Matt McCarty (South Milwaukee) both uncommitted juniors. Also keep an eye on a pair of 2017’s, Zach Clayton (Oconomowoc) and Jacob Lindemann (Burlington) who touched 86 mph.
