MUNDELEIN – No. 14 Carmel went away quietly in four of its innings. Unfortunately for No. 48 Stevenson, Carmel needed only two innings to mercy-rule the Patriots, 13-3, in six innings on Saturday.

Stevenson (2-2) actually led this nonconference affair, 3-0, heading into the bottom of the third. Then the bottom fell out for the Patriots.  Carmel (8-2-1) pushed across eight runs in the bottom half of the third behind four hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.   

Sophomore left-handed hitting CF Joe Santoro broke the ice when he roped a run-scoring double to right field – his first of two hits in the inning. Two batters later, sophomore Cooper Johnson laced a two-run double, and the rout was officially on.

In the sixth, a similar outburst occurred, which is to say some key hits mixed between several walks.  Bradley-bound C Ian Kristan delivered a run-scoring double in the inning, and 1B Andrew Wienke added another run-scoring single – his second RBI of the game. Pinch-hitter Thomas Greffly ended the game when delivered a bases-clearing double to make it 14-3.

Senior RHP Dalton Wright pitched 3.1 innings of relief to earn the victory. After yielding a two-run single to the first batter he faced, Wright retired 10 straight to end the game.

Stevenson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Jack Joseph was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Patriots made it 3-0 when Joseph lined a two-run single in the third. Stevenson had two hits in the game.
