BURBANK, IL - The No. 4 St. Laurence Vikings found themselves caught in a tight back and forth affair with Marmion on Thursday, typical of the Catholic Blue, wining in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

St. Laurence went into their last at bats chasing a run, down 4-3, but back to back walks to lead off the inning put Marmion’s backs against the wall. With two on an nobody out, coach Lotus had one of the best hitters in the state on deck in junior Matt McCormick. A sacrifice bunt was going to open up first base and lead to an obvious intentional walk of McCormick, so after a first pitch failed attempt, Jake Vera executed the perfect slash play, singling to center and driving in the tying run from second base. A bobble in the outfield advanced the baserunners 90 feet, giving way to a McCormick intentional walk.

With the bases loaded and nobody out the Vikings were poised to walk this one off. Gage Olszak the batter, grounded to the left side against a pulled in infield, making third baseman Nicholas Talarico range to his left but couldn’t complete the throw to the plate and the Vikings improved to 19-3 on the year.

St. Laurence took and early two run lead in the first when Matt McCormick hit  a line drive two-run homerun to right.

Marmion put up a three spot in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and the momentum. A Jake Carlson triple and Chase Stanke single tallied the runs.

Gage Olszak doubled home a run in the sixth to put the comeback within closer reach, his second double of the day.
