PBR IL - John A. Logan Scout Day: Statistical Analysis

By: Kevin Cronin and Diego Solares
Illinois Scouting Staff

On Thursday, October 7th, the PBR Illinois scouting staff held the John A. Logan JC Scout Day at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois. All the prospects in attendance showcased their talents in front of our staff, including a handful of other scouts that attended.

Today, our scouting staff will begin to roll out all our prototypical post-event content pieces, starting with this statistical analysis. Below we’ll highlight players that put up numbers from a traditional standpoint, such as leaders in the 60-yard dash, max throwing velocities, and other data gathered from the day.

We’ll also roll out more analysis as the week rolls on, like a takeaways piece from the day and deeper data dives with the statistics collected from our technological partners at TrackMan and Blast Motion.

For now, take a look at which players put out noteworthy statistical outputs.

STAT STORY

+ Nine players blazed their way to a sub-7.00 time in the 60-yard dash, led by one of the Midwest’s fastest runners: OF Grant Trinkle. A 2020 Super 60 participant, Trinkle used every bit of the athleticism attached to a strong 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame to coast his way to a 6.34 time on our lasers. That explosive twitch translated to multiple other areas of his workout as he reached a max exit velocity of 97 mph in batting practice while peaking at 90 mph from the outfield, too.

+ MIF Tyler Heckert played in the inaugural MLB Draft League throughout the summer and now the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Tennessee native is putting up noteworthy numbers for John A. Logan. He ran a 6.56 in the 60-yard dash, the second-fastest number of the day, and led all infielders in throwing velocity with an 89 mph max across the diamond.

+ Hailing from Illinois, OF Khyle Radcliffe was another major winner on the statistical side from this event. A wiry 6-foot-1, 185-pound athlete, Radcliffe floated to a 6.70 in the 60-yard dash and peppered line drives across the yard at an average exit velocity of 87.40 mph, reaching a 94 mph high. Where he truly showed out was on defense, as the southpaw uncorked a 95 mph laser to comfortably lead the event, finishing five ticks above the next closest bullet.

+ Two players that breached the century mark in max exit velocity: C Cole Christman and OF Jason Hodges. A 6.83 runner, Christman led the group with both the day’s hardest hit ball (101.65 mph) and farthest hit ball (404 ft.), while posting a 92.72 average exit speed, per TrackMan. He put up numbers defensively as well, firing an 82 mph strike down to second base from the chute while averaging the event’s top pop times at 1.88-to-1.99. As for the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Hodges, his best barrel left the bat at 100 mph and his 93.87 average exit velocity was the second highest number amongst all hitters. He also ran a 6.82 in the 60-yard dash and topped at 87 mph from the outfield.

+ Another former Illinois high school prep prospect to impress at this event was C Jacob Schroeder. He’s a sturdy, physical 6-foot-2, 210-pound athlete that finished towards the top in a handful of statistical categories throughout the day. Schroeder’s hardest throw from behind the plate was tied for the event lead (82 mph) and he averaged pop times in the 1.98-to-2.01 range. Schroeder’s physicality in the batter’s box was evident, as he led the event in average exit velocity (93.90 mph) with his best barrel screaming off the bat at 99 mph.

+ Another name from the 2020 Super 60 that put up some numbers at this event was UTL Tre Hondras, who like Trinkle was a national rank as an Illinois prep product a few years ago. A proportionally strong 6-foot, 185-pound athlete, Hondras ran a 6.65 in the 60-yard dash and squared his hardest hit ball up at 95 mph in BP, per TrackMan.

+ The Vols had seven pitchers breach the 90 mph mark during their ‘pens, headlined by potential staff ace RHP Terry Busse. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Busse peaked at 95 mph in his pen, sitting exclusively at 94-95 mph throughout. RHP Benny Thompson finished a tick below Busse with a 94 mph max on his fastball, while former Super 60 participant LHP Josh Dima bumped a 93 mph max from the left side. RHP Jackson Lee, RHP Mitchel Hemmen, and RHP Ryan Tressler all topped at 91 mph.
