PBR Illinois Player of the Week: LHP/OF Angelo Smith

Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

Richards senior left-handed pitcher and outfielder Angelo Smith has been named this week’s PBR Illinois Player of the Week thanks to outstanding performance on the mound and at the plate last week for the Bulldogs.

Smith, a Michigan commit, currently ranked No. 18 in the Illinois’ 2017 class, won a game on the mound and picked up a save. He also has a good week at the plate. Last Monday, in a game against Argo, the southpaw got the win on the mound, twirling a complete game shutout. In his seven innings of work he allowed four hits, struck out 17 and walked one.

On Saturday, Smith came back and picked up a save in one inning of work against Lincoln-Way West. Smith struck out three and did not allow a hit in the appearance. In eight total innings on the week, he struck out 20 hitters.

At the plate, the left-handed hitter went 5-for-10 (.500 BA) on the week with four runs scored, four walks, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Pitching stats on the season: 5-2 record, 2 saves, 43.2 innings, 1.76 ERA, 84 K’s and 30 BB’s.

For his efforts, Smith has been named the PBR Player of the Week for the week of May 7 - May 13.

Stay tuned for our Weekly Diamond Notes, this Friday, as there were a number of players who narrowly missed out on the Player of the Week award.
