PBR at The Rock 14U: All-Tournament Team

By Wisconsin Staff

From May 29 to May 31, the PBR Wisconsin staff helped facilitate the state’s careful return to baseball by hosting the PBR at The Rock 13/14U Championships at The Rock Complex in Franklin, Wis.

In case you missed any of our earlier coverage on this event, click on one of the following links spotlighting the highlights from each of the three days: Quick Hits, Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3. In addition, our staff published a Scout Blog, featuring reports on nearly 80 of the events follow names to know for the future.

Today, our staff gathered and collaborated to produce an All-Tournament Team at both the 13U and 14U levels. After publishing the all-tourney team from the 13U level, we're onto the Class of 2024 in the 14U division who starred all weekend. This list was assembled from an evaluation and performance-based perspective, taking into account the player’s future in conjunction with their statistics recorded over their four games last weekend.

14U ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

CATCHER

Eloy Suarez C / INF / Hoffman Estates , IL / 2024

5-foot-7, 160-pound left-handed hitting catcher. Strong, well-proportioned frame. Tall slightly open setup, hands slot back in a strong hitting position, short stride to even, drives lower half. Hands are loose with easy bat speed. Level path through the zone, line drive approach, feel for the barrel. Athletic actions behind the plate. Quiet receiver, works around the baseball, stole several strikes for his pitchers this weekend. Short, accurate arm action, posted 2.30-2.32 pop times in between innings. Moves well laterally, adept blocker, quick recovery. Capable of sticking behind the plate moving forward. A high-follow in Illinois’ 2024 class.

FIRST BASE

Brady Johnson C / 1B / St. Thomas More, WI / 2024

6-foot, 180 pounds; big frame, advanced strength. Right-handed hitter who squared up some of the hardest contact of the tournament. On Sunday, consistently barreled up the baseball without swinging and missing. Recorded four hits on Sunday, each of which were barreled with premium bat strength: two singles to center field and two extra-base hits driven through the left-center gap. Hits from a tall setup, rhythmic pre-pitch helps him sync up and time the barrel well, short path, fast bat speed, high two-hand finish. Got behind the plate in game two on Sunday at Milkmen Field, flexible and dependable in the crouch, protecting balls in the dirt from big backstop. Sturdy receiver with above-average quickness out of the chute, especially for his size. Popped an off-target 2.25 in-game and nearly threw out a baserunner with a 2.57, athletically receiving a pitch to his left, well out of the strike zone, efficiently gathering and releasing to the bag with arm strength.

MIDDLE INFIELD

Brock Lulewicz SS / RHP / Muskego, WI / 2024

High-ceiling prospect; advanced frame with notable athleticism. Long-levered, rangy athlete who played a premium shortstop all weekend. Defensively, plays with bounce and confidence, soft hands with athleticism to make non-routine plays with relative ease. Arm plays well across the diamond. Flashed carry and accuracy. Left-handed hitter, loose levers, swing is athletic and loose, on time, up-the-middle approach.

Started on the mound against Fastball Elite. Clear athleticism present, repeatable tall/fall type delivery, level front side, upright finish. Short and loose arm action that works from a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 76-78 mph, touching 79. Comes out clean with life out of the hand, straight four-seam type, effectively wild on this day. Mixed in a cutter-type pitch with late glove-side action that played at 71-73 mph. Curveball sat 64-65 mph, showed 11/5 shape, flashed late break, some feel for pitch. Went 2.1 innings and struck out seven batters.

Jameson Martin SS / 2B / St. Laurence, IL / 2024

5-foot-7, 145-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. Athletic frame. Quiet in the box, tall setup, smooth load, fluid leg lift trigger, twitchy lower half. Short and level bat path, line drive approach, barreled every ball he saw on day two. Smooth actions in the field, quick feet, rangy defender up the middle, steady hands, strong arm from a high ¾ slot.

THIRD BASE

Eason Hurd INF / RHP / Ashwaubenon, WI / 2024

5-foot-9, 160 pounds; strong, lean, athletic build. Emerged as a two-way follow to know as we get more familiar with this incoming Class of 2024. Started GRB Rays Green’s first game of the tournament. Worked three innings, struck out six, walked only one. Easy, quick, loose arm action, short arm circle, high ¾ slot. Consistently attacked the zone with fastball sitting 75-77 mph, touching 78, throughout. He confidently mixed in a breaking ball with action that flashed sharp off an 11/5 plane; located a couple down and away to right-handed batters that earned chases out of the zone. Also showed as one of the more competitive right-handed hitters of the weekend; has an innate feel for the strike zone. Patient hitter who shows a mature approach to pick out pitches to drive. Smashed an 0-2 breaking ball down the left field line for a double against Top Tier Americans and worked a hard-earned walk in his next at-bat. A quiet, short swing path on a slight incline; inherent/advanced bat strength.

OUTFIELD

Parker Violett OF / RHP / Kaneland, IL / 2024

6-foot-1, 175-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder/RHP. Strong, athletic build that projects. Hit cleanup in a talented Fastball Elite lineup. Tall setup, steady leg lift trigger, strides outward on landing. Short and uphill path through the zone, extension through contact, barrelled up the baseball all weekend. Violett also showed intrigue on the mound in the final game of the weekend. Short, quick arm action, working from an over-the-top slot. Fastball jumps out of the hand, played heavy at times, around the zone and sat 76-78 mph. Mixed in a mid-50’s knuckleball.

Bradyn Horn OF / Muskego, WI / 2024

5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder; lean, lanky frame with athleticism. Led off for STiKS Black all weekend while playing center field. Aggressive approach at the plate, regularly jumped on the first pitch of his at-bats; still has strike zone feel and did not swing and miss or chase much out of the zone. Loose/athletic hands help time up contact and barrel baseballs to all fields; squared up contact on Sunday to right field and on a deep triple to left. He’s an above-average runner who moves well around the bases and in the outfield. Defensively, showed good range on routes to both sides; throws also carried. Threw out a runner at home, efficiently funneling a ground ball to throwing position.

Anthony Campise OF / Kaneland, IL / 2024

5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Athletic build with compact strength. Slightly crouched setup at the plate, wide base, minimal load, short stride. Loose in the box, quick hands, present bat speed. Short path to the baseball, knack for the barrel, some sneaky juice, patient approach. Primarily hit out of the leadoff spot, above-average runner for age, spark plug on offense for Fastball Elite. Showed advanced base-running skills; advancing multiple times on dirt ball reads, stealing two bases and always looking to take an extra base. Interesting athlete to follow.

PITCHERS

Simon Skroch LHP / Yorkville , IL / 2024

5-foot-10, 135-pound left/left outfielder/pitcher. Lean, wiry, projectable frame. Long and loose arm action, over-the-top slot. Works exclusively out of the stretch, deceptive drop and drive delivery, high front side, athletic finish, throws with some effort. Quick, fluid tempo throughout his start. Fastball sat 78-80 mph, touching 81 mph multiple times, played with natural late arm-side run, consistently pumped the zone. Held velocity deep into his outing sitting 77-79 mph in the sixth inning. Curveball sat 65-66 mph, 12/6 shape, swing-and-miss potential. Strung together the most impressive pitching performance of the weekend, throwing a complete game 11-strikeout no-hitter on Saturday. A high-follow in Illinois’ 2024 class.

Brandon Schultz LHP / Stevenson, IL / 2024

5-foot-6, 140-pound left/left prospect. Athletic, compact frame. Short arm action, ¾ slot. Smooth tall and fall type delivery, upright at balance point, level front side, stays in line with target. Worked in a fluid rhythm throughout the outing. Fastball sat between 76-79 mph, touching 80 mph with natural arm-side run. Slider plays between 69-71 mph, works down in the zone, used sparingly.

Luke Oblen RHP / 3B / DePaul College Prep, IL / 2024

5-foot-11, 175 pounds; advanced physical stature. Started for Elite Baseball Training at third base. Simple, balanced setup, loose/athletic hands create premium bat speed, exceptional for age. This, combined with his size, created some advanced quality of contact over the weekend. He also took the mound; short, loose, easy effort with arm speed and strength. Fastball sat 78-80 mph, touched 81, with some natural arm-side tail. He displayed a sharp, late breaking curveball that projects well as he develops the feel for it.

Joe Dolenga RHP / Stevenson, IL / 2024

5-foot-7, 132 pounds; wiry athletic frame with sloped shoulders. Advanced arm strength for age, delivery works with some effort, thrower type, overall athlete with arm strength. Fastball played at 79-81 mph, mostly straight, four seam type with occasional ride and cut. Complemented the fastball with a 12/6 curveball that he showed advanced feel for; able to spot it in the zone to fool hitters or bury it under the zone.

TWO-WAY

Cade Palkowski LHP / OF / Oak Creek, WI / 2024

Strong physical build, athletic left-handed hitting outfielder; compact/strong lower half. Played centerfield and hit two-hole. Short compact swing, showed feel for the barrel and plate discipline. Went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles against Top Tier. Smart, aggressive base runner always looking to grab an extra base. Rangy actions on defense out in center field with premium arm strength for his age. Started on the mound for Hitters’ first game of the weekend. Long, loose arm action, quick arm speed, from an over-the-top slot. Easy, low effort involved; athletic/balanced finish. Used exclusively fastballs, sat in the 74-78 mph range throughout his three innings of work; touched 80 very early on.
