Preseason All-State: Left-Handed Pitching Analysis

Up next in our series of Preseason All-State Analysis is pitching, and specifically left-handed pitching. The showcase had some heavy pitching prospects and a trio of left-handers made significant jumps this winter. Antonio Saldana, Jimmy Burnette and Brooks Gosswein all saw velocity jumps this winter and pushing their status into top 25 prospects in the state. 

Here's a look at the top left-handed pitchers from the Preseason All-State showcase.

Top Left-Handed Pitching Prospects

1. Antonio Saldana, LHP, Joliet Catholic, 2017
Hulking 6-foot-6, 235-pound left-handed pitcher, extra large, sturdy frame. Full windup delivery, tall and fall type, with some rhythm and body control, lands square and stays on line. Arm action is loose, short draw with extension out front, ¾ slot. Fastball flashed plus sink for his age, occasional run to arm side, showed feel for the pitch, ranged 84-87 mph. Slider has 10/4 shape, good sweeping action, plays well off of fastball, sat steadily at 73 mph. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm action, deceptive, good sink but occasionally gets underneath it, 81-82 mph, showed some confidence.

2. Jimmy Burnette, LHP/OF, St. Laurence, 2017
Austin Peay commit. 6-foot-2, 185-pound two-way player, average strong build, projects best on the mound. Delivery is clean and repeatable, front side stays closed, slightly across body, creates angle. Arm action is quick, high ¾ slot, regular effort. Showed god feel for his fastball, ability to command, 86-88 mph, touched 89 mph, arm side run. Curveball has 1/7 shape, sharp action with good depth, 69-72 mph. Changeup flashes sink, mostly down in the zone, fastball arm speed, 79-82 mph. Premium left-handed arm with feel for the zone. Left-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, good balance. Middle to opposite field approach, inside out type path, short to the baseball. 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played well, 89 mph from the outfield, high ¾ slot, loose arm, flashed carry. Strong actions in the outfield, feet work well, 6.98 runner in the 60.

3. Brooks Gosswein, LHP, Barrington, 2017
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher, lean strong body with long torso. Big arm strength left-hander with well above average changeup as best secondary. Tall and fall type delivery, some effort, slightly offline to third base side. Quick strong arm, long loose action, high ¾ slot. Showed plus fastball velocity for his age, sat 89-90 mph, slight arm side run. Curveball has potential, thrown with arm speed, 70-73 mph, tight short action. Changeup plays with sink, 78-80 mph, good action, outpitch potential, occasionally gets underneath. High follow uncommitted 2017.

4. Angelo Smith, LHP, Richards, 2017
Michigan commit. 5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed pitcher, slightly undersized with quick twitch arm. Athletic delivery, slightly coiled at the top of balance position, squared landing. Easy arm, projectable, loose and quick, ¾ slot. Fastball has running action, showed late life, control of the zone, 85-87 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, slight slurve action, flashed sharp action, 68-69 mph. Changeup thrown with fastball arm speed, firm 76-78 mph, has feel and kept down.

5. Steven Washilewski, LHP, St. Rita, 2017
Average athletic frame, 6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Slight drop and drive style delivery, smooth and on time, lands squared, creates rhythm with hands, able to repeat. Easy arm action, long and loose, quick arm, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed ability to command, 82-84 mph, easy late running action. Slider has sharp sweeping action, 2/8 plane, good feel for the zone, thrown aggressively, 74-75 mph. Changeup runs to arm side, advanced action, 77-80 mph. Well above average overall command, starter type projection with feel of three pitches. High follow uncommitted 2017.

5-foot-11, 155-pound left-handed pitcher. Delivery works with regular effort, high front side, squared landing. Arm action is quick, short and loose, over the top slot. Showed an ability to command his fastball, slight arm side run and sink, worked down with surprising tilt for his size. Curveball has 1/7 shape, thrown with arm speed, 64-66 mph. Good feel for his changeup, flashed advance sink and run to arm side, 70-74 mph.

Blake Carlson, LHP/OF, Ottawa, 2017
6-foot, 187-pound two-way player, athletic shape. Projects best on the mound, left-handed pitcher, easy arm, long and loose, slight wrap, high ¾ slot. Repeatable delivery, squared landing, smooth rhythm. Fastball has feel, slight arm side run, 81-83 mph, touched 84 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, gradual action, 69-71 mph. Changeup has slight fade, fastball arm speed, 73-75 mph. Switch hitter, hits from a balanced stance, smooth loading action, short stride. Left-handed swing showed more confidence, looseness. 93 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long, accurate to his target, has some run to it, 84 mph. Showed outfield actions, ability to play through the baseball. 7.29 runner in the 60.

Mason Coon, LHP/OF, St. Joseph-Ogden, 2017
Lanky athletic frame, loose and projectable, 6-foot-3, 180-pound left-handed two-way player. Drop and drive style delivery, little effort, works athletically, squared landing. Arm action is loose, quick arm, ¾ slot. Fastball showed easy action, good arm side run, fell for the zone, 81-82 mph, touched 83 mph. Curveball has 1/7 action, some depth, 70-71 mph. Changeup has feel, thrown with arm speed, 72-73 mph. Left-handed hitter, balanced stance, slightly wide, longer stride. Path is flat, some length, hits with rhythm, on time, barrel aware and creates backspin. 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.48 runner in the 60. Defensively plays through the baseball with two hands, occasionally deep, fluid actions. Arm action is long and loose, high ¾ slot, 82 mph from the outfield.

Alec Hartsell, LHP, Joliet Catholic, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound left-handed pitcher, solid build, sturdy lower half. Tall and fall type delivery, works rotationally, follows head path to third base side. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot, regular effort. Fastball showed arm side run up in the zone, sat 81-82 mph consistently. Curveball has 1/7 shape, flashed late hard action with depth, above average feel, worked even better from the stretch, 69-71 mph, well above average offering. Straight change flashed occasional fade, 73-76 mph.

Noah Konie, 1B/LHP, Huntley, 2017
6-foot-1, 212-pound left-handed two-way player. Left-handed hitter, balanced stance, slight leg kick slightly dives, average balance. Path has some length on level path, occasional back spin, mid to opposite field contact in BP. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed natural actions around the bag, arm played at 80 mph. 7.79 runner in the 60. On the mound arm played from a high ¾ slot, average arm speed, longer arm action with regular effort. Showed feel for three pitches. Fastball has slight run to arm side, sat 77-79, touched 80 mph. Curveball has gradual 1/7 action, flashed depth, showed feel, 68-69 mph. Changeup thrown with fastball arm speed, slight arm side run, showed control. 74-76 mph.

Nathan Madej, LHP, Lemont, 2017
Thick build, 5-foot-11, 195-pound left-handed pitcher, solid lower half. Athletic up tempo delivery, loose actions, works on line. Arm action is long, and loose, slight plunge on back side, high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight running action, occasionally late action, 81-82 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, occasional sharp action, 62-64 mph, thrown with fastball arm speed. Deceptive arm action on changeup, good feel for the zone, sink and fade action, 70-72 mph. Flashed cutter at 70-71 mph. Profiles as pitchable lefty.

Tyler Talbot, LHP, Minooka, 2017
Lanky thin frame, 6-foot-1, 155-pound left-handed pitcher, projectable build. Delivery works slightly across body, keeps front side closed, some deception. Arm action is hidden, comes out of short window, high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight run, 78-79 mph, touched 80 mph. Curveball has 1/7 action, gradual bend, near fastball arm speed, showed feel, average depth, consistently at 67 mph. Changeup showed good feel, thrown with arm speed, flashed fade action, 69-73 mph. Projectable lefty who showed three pitch feel.

Tyler Zarembka, LHP, Providence Catholic, 2017
Thin, lanky frame, 6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher, projectable build. Delivery has timing, works on line, squared landing, regular effort. Arm action is long and loose, slight wrap, ¾ slot. Fastball runs slightly to arm side, showed control, 78-79 mph, touched 80 mph. Curveball has gradual 1/7 action, 67-70 mph. Above average changeup, fades to arm side, slight sink, near fastball arm speed, 70-71 mph.

Top Left-Handed Pitching Prospects

Thin, lanky frame, 6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher, projectable build. Delivery has timing, works on line, squared landing, regular effort. Arm action is long and loose, slight wrap, ¾ slot. Fastball runs slightly to arm side, showed control, 78-79 mph, touched 80 mph. Curveball has gradual 1/7 action, 67-70 mph. Above average changeup, fades to arm side, slight sink, near fastball arm speed, 70-71 mph.
