Q&A with Notre Dame Commit Bryce Gray

2016 C Bryce Gray from Homewood-Flossmoor recently committed to Notre Dame. Aside from his exploits on the baseball field, Gray was also the starting quarterback for one of the top ranked high school teams in the state at HF. Gray ultimately made the decision to continue his career on the baseball field. Here is a report on Gray from this past summer.

Bryce Gray 6.18.15 - Solid frame with strength, typical catcher’s body composition, 6-foot, 200-pounds. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, minimal loading action, strong balance at contact. Showed bat speed, good approach, line drive gap to gap type hitter, occasionally lunges. 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed natural actions behind the dish. Arm action is short and over the top, efficient, arm showed carry, 80 mph out of the crouch, quick release. Pop times ranged 1.96-2.01.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Gray: I expected to for it to be easier than what it was and quicker, but in the end it worked out for the best.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Gray: I was looking for a successful program where I can develop myself into the best baseball player possible.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Gray: Distance was not a big deal to me but I am happy I am close enough for my family to be able to see me.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Gray: This summer it really started to heat up, there was no particular game it was just after a successful summer.

PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Gray: I got an invitation to their camp and I went and did very well. At the time there wasn't roster space, but some things happened to where they were able to bring me along.

PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Gray: The tradition of Notre Dame is felt everywhere in the world. The education is second to none and the baseball is great.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Gray: Dartmouth for football and Villanova.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Gray: Nick Dalesandro he's a complete player everything he does on the baseball field is simply great.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Gray: I realized I was a college caliber player before high school playing with the Chicago White Sox ACE, I saw the guys that came before me and felt I could be as good as them one day.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Gray: Be patient with recruiting, and only worry about yourself and don't get stressed out when you see teammates or other guys you've played with commit.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Gray: Playing in the Double Duty Classic at US Cellular Field. It was an honor to play on the same field as my idols.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Gray: We're a young team but I think once some of our guys gets some games under they're belt we'll surprise a lot of people. We're going to be underdogs from the start and we'll take it. Even though we're young I expect to win conference and make a run at state like every other year.

PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Gray: I play with the Chicago White Sox ACE and my most memorable experience has been signing day at the Cell. It was great to see all my brothers signing with me!
