Schlaffer, No. 25 Homewood-Flossmoor Rout Andrew

On Friday afternoon Andrew hosted the Vikings of Homewood-Flossmoor and the Vikings ace, RHP Tyler Schlaffer, stole the show. The senior, UIC commit, threw four shutout innings and the Vikings knocked off Andrew by the score of 8-1.

Schlaffer, who is currently ranked No. 21 in Illinois, shut out No. 3 Joliet Catholic two starts ago and backed up that performance again Friday afternoon. The athletic right-hander was on his game from the first pitch, challenging the Andrew hitters with an electric fastball that sat 90-93 mph in the early going. In the first inning, Schlaffer actually touched 93 more times than any other velocity. As the game progressed Schlaffer started to mix in a mid-70’s breaking ball and a swing-and-miss changeup to keep hitters from cheating to the fastball. The changeup, which has always been his bread-and-butter secondary offering, had late run and sink with feel for the bottom of the strike zone. Schlaffer earned the win, going four innings, scattering two hits, no runs, striking out six and walking three.

Homewood-Flossmoor seemed to have control of the game the whole way, scoring in every inning but the first and the last. The majority of the scoring was courtesy of a number of Andrew (7-3-1) miscues (eight total errors on the day) but the Viking offense did collect nine hits in the win. Seven of the nine starters collected a hit. Tre Hondras, a junior Michigan commit, squared the ball up in every at-bat and went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk. Jorge Santos (South Suburban JC commit) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Nolan Fasel led the way for Andrew going 2-for-4, while Jimmy Carey (St. Charles CC commit) scored the only run of the game for Andrew.
