Super 60: Illinois Recap

On Sunday, three of Illinois’ top prospects participated in the 19th annual PBR Super 60 pro showcase, in front of over 100 scouts, both from the Major League and collegiate scouting communities.

In the aftermath of one of the PBR calendar’s most prestigious annual events, the PBR Illinois staff wanted to provide some instant analysis on the state’s attendees; RHP Kaleb Applebey (Mt. Carmel; Wabash Valley commit), RHP Noah Edders (Downers Grove South; Bradley commit) and SS Noah Smith (Marist; Louisville commit). We’ve broken down each Illinois prospect below and provided their measured statistics from Sunday's showcase.

+ Applebey, the No. 2 prospect in the state, was on the rise during the second half of 2020 and parlayed it into an invite to the Super 60. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound right-hander continues to improve on every look. At the Super 60, the Wabash Valley JC commit, showed off a more controlled, directional, repeatable delivery than we have seen in the past and progressing three-pitch mix. Applebey's fastball sat 92-93 mph, touching 94 showing control of the zone while creating extension and tilt. The curveball played mostly in the upper-70s with a max spin rate of 2729 rpm, flashing late sweeping action at times. Applebey maintains his arm speed on his 82-83 mph changeup with intent to locate down in the zone.

+ Edders, a Bradley commit, was another Illinois arm to open eyes at the event. Edders continues to shape and strengthen his broad-shouldered, 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame and his stuff continues to ascend along with it. The physical right-hander has a noticeable presence and demeanor on the mound and his fastball played at a lively 91-93 mph. The fastball jumps out of the hand and plays with the late cut at times. The slider is thrown with aggression at 82-83 mph and flashed late, sharp action with out-pitch potential at the next level. He also showed feel for a firm changeup at 86-88 mph. Edders has one of the highest ceilings of any arm in the class.

+ Smith, a Louisville commit, was the lone position player to represent Illinois at this year's loaded event. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound shortstop has long been one of the top position players in the state and continued to show why on Sunday at the Super 60. Smith was consistently on time in his round of BP, showing above-average feel for the barrel and present bat strength. 12 out of 14 of Smith's swings registered at 90+ mph off the bat, with a max of 100.2. Smith also showed off his strong arm topping at 90 mph across the diamond and started his day running a 6.66 laser-timed 60.
