Along with fellow catcher Michael Papierski (Lemont HS, IL), Trees stood out at the Underclass Invitational in January 2012 thanks his frame and defensive actions. He was advanced for his age, showing athletic feet, soft hands and a strong arm. His pop times were in the 1.9-2.0 range and he delivered this throws accurately. He also showed some ability at third base with good lateral movement and the same footwork and arm strength that he exhibited behind the plate. At the plate, Trees had a balanced setup and his strong, explosive lower have generated good barrel whip through the zone and plus power.

His arm strength was on display again at the 2012 Midwest Future Games where he recorded a pop time as low as 1.88 seconds. His defensive abilities could help him land a spot in the starting lineup for Louisville as a freshman.
