On most high school teams, an arm like Leland would be a clear ace as a righty with high-80s velocity and a commitment to a perennial national contender like Louisville. Sandburg HS has two aces then with him and RHP Bryan Pall. Leland was rated one of the top pitchers at the Illinois Preseason All-State Showcase with his long, lanky frame. His delivery had regular effort and he pitched with some rhythm and good direction. His arm action is long and loose and his three-quarter arm slot creates good run and sink on his fastball. He sat 84-85 mph last February, but was 87-88, touching 89, at the Top Prospect Showcase last summer. His slider has quick, darting action to it, but his changeup is his best secondary pitch. It sits 78-80 with deception and action to his arm side. He also exhibits good command for a high school pitcher.
