No. 2 Charlie Donovan

Charlie DonovanComing in at No. 2 on our most viewed player profiles of 2014 is Westmont HS shortstop Charlie Donovan with 10,292 page views. Donovan is currently ranked No. 3 in Illinois’ 2015 class, No. 24 overall in PBR’s coverage area.

The University of Michigan commit could hear his named called early in next June’s MLB Draft thanks to an impressive array of tools, including an arm that has been clocked as high as 93 mph across the infield. Donovan is also a 6.6 runner in the 60, legitimate speed to stay up the middle in professional baseball.

Prep Baseball Report’s First Team All-State shortstop led Westmont to a third-place finish in Class 2A this past spring – the school’s first state trophy. Offensively, Donovan batted .500 with eight doubles, four triples and six home runs. He drove in 47 runs, scored 50 times and swiped an amazing 48 bases in 50 attempts.

Let’s take a look at an in-game scouting report of Donovan from this past May:

Charlie Donovan Scouting Report

Elite national prospect; possesses four plus tools (93 across infield; 6.62 runner; pure left-handed swing; top-level hands at shortstop). His tools certainly belie his 5-foot-10, 170 pound frame. In the game, Donovan went 1-for-3 with a run-scoring line-drive single to left-center field. Showed his baseball aptitude by taking an extra base on the throw to advance to second base, and eventually scored. On a wet, soft ground, ran a 4.08 and 4.12 on two 4-3 groundouts. Advanced plate approach; patient, mechanically quiet, excellent rhythm with no excess movement in swing; level bat path with advanced bat speed. Defensively, made seven putouts without an error. Arm strength is a plus-plus.
