No. 3 Evan Skoug

Evan SkougComing in at No. 3 on our list is Libertyville catcher Evan Skoug, who finished his high school career ranked No. 2 in Illinois, No. 4 overall in PBR’s coverage area. Skoug’s profile received 9,480 visits during the 2014 year. The left-handed hitter and Texas Christian freshman was drafted in the 34th round of the June MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.

A two-time All-State selection, and 2014 PBR Third Team All-State member, Skoug was arguably the most feared hitter in the state, evidenced by his 36 walks. Arguably the top hitter in Illinois’ 2015 class, Skoug tallied nine doubles, four triples, four homers and 32 RBI. He had a .514 on-base percentage and a .365 batting average.

With the 2015 Super 60 Pro Showcase fast approaching on February 1st, let’s take a look at Skoug’s performance from last year’s event.

Evan Skoug Scouting Report

Skoug is widely considered one of the top, if not the best, left-handed hitter in the Midwest. He solidified his status as one of the nation’s top hitters over the fall when he earned MVP honors in Jupiter. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder put the final punctuation on his national ascension at the Super 60. Among a crowded field of top-level hitters, Skoug once again stood out with his bat. He’s remarkably balanced for how hard he swings; his bat path is level and stays flat through the zone; and, above all, he smashes everything everything thrown his way, showing natural power to all fields. He registered 98 mph exit velocity, tying the event-high at the Super 60. Skoug has proved his offensive prowess everywhere he’s gone, including earning first-team All-State as a junior last spring. Defensively, he registered pop times between 1.93-2.08 while recording 78 mph from the crouch. Although his throws don’t have the same natural carry as some of the other top-level catchers, he’s a highly accurate thrower. The TCU recruit also ran an impressive 7.15 60.
