Underclass Invitational: Infielder Analysis

Illinois Scouting Staff

We’re still combing through the wildly talented group of players who were invited to last month’s Underclass Invitational, but today we’ll dissect the day’s infielders. We were excited at the number of high-level performers who were set to attend and the group did not disappoint.

One of the most notable takeaways from the event was just how advanced the power potential was for freshmen prospects Vytas Valincius (St. Laurence) and Dylan Scafuri (Romeoville). Both are large, strong and project to be corner infielders as they mature, but their bats are already middle-of-the-order material.

In the sophomore class, Mount Carmel was able to flaunt its future up-the-middle pair of Alec Gonzalez and Anthony Livermore. Gonzalez is an authentic two-way prospect who just verbally committed to Tennessee this week. He reasserted himself as one of the top prospects in the 2020 Illinois class at this event. Not to be forgotten, Livermore came out and solidified his status as one of the class’ top infielders, too. His athleticism peeked through all day, running one of the day’s best 60 times, in addition displaying top-of-the-order offensive abilities.

And in non-Mount Carmel news, Aidan Stewart (Marian Catholic, 2020) measured in at a lean 6-foot-4 and exhibited all sorts of tools both on the mound and in the infield. With such a projectable frame, he’s turning into one of the most fascinating follows in his sophomore class.

It was a jam-packed day which made for a fun, challenging rankings. Check out the top-five lists for the 2020 and 2021 classes below, as well as information on all of the other infielder invitees.
