Underclass Invitational: Pitcher Analysis

By: Adam Panayotovich
Area Scout

The Underclass Invitational is one of Illinois’ most highly anticipated events on the PBR Illinois showcase calendar. The invitation-only event for the state’s top 2021 and 2022 prospects was held on Feb. 17, at The MAX in McCook, Ill. Over 115 of Illinois’ best freshman and sophomores represented themselves at the sold-out event last month.

Monday marked the start of our position-by-position event analysis (C, INF, OF), which leads us to today, the pitching reports. The Underclass Invite has shown to be quite potent in regards to all-around talent and there is no lack of it in this group. Of the 49 pitchers, we saw 32 bullpens from prospects in the current sophomore class and 17 from prospects in the current freshman class, ranging from all over the state. One thing is for sure, there is plenty of talent already between the two classes and we are excited to see the development as these young teens progress their way through high school.

Adam Dowler (Oswego East, 2021) continues to raise his stock while transforming his already impressive frame. He possesses a clean arm action with present arm speed that should play well into a potential deadly FB/CH mix. The breaking ball is progressing into a plus offering for the 6-foot-3 southpaw and we’ve already seen it generate plenty swings and misses at our recent PBR Metro East Kickoff Classic.

Lazaro Marquez (Home School, 2021) may have been the biggest revelation on the day. The 6-foot, 185-pound live-bodied spark plug showcased his advanced arm speed sitting his fastball at 88-90 mph, topping 91 mph. Ben Hess (Charleston, 2021) is an advanced frame right-hander that continues to hone in his craft. Hess has seen his fastball tick up three notches since his last PBR event four months prior.

Cylis Cox (Staunton, 2021) and Grant Holderfield (Oak Park-River Forest, 2021) are two southpaws that ooze upside. They both have solid repertoires and are already making an impact on their respective varsity squads.

Alex Stanwich (Lincoln-Way East, 2022) is a chiseled-framed right-hander with perhaps the most athleticism event-wide. The freshman already throws his fastball in the mid-80’s topping 87 mph, unheard of for that age classification. Two more 2022 right-handers in Owen Murphy (Riverside-Brookfield) and Abram Wills (Coal City) are just as advanced as the aforementioned arms and are already playing, and contributing, at the varsity level.

Keep an eye out tomorrow as we wrap up our event coverage with a Top Overall list consisting of all players and positions from our Underclass Invitational.
