Underclass Showcase: Statistical Analysis

On Sunday, Oct. 21, we hosted the Underclass Showcase at The MAX sports facility in McCook, Ill. Today, we’ll continue our event coverage by dissecting the showcase’s statistical standouts. On Monday we published a Quick Hits post, providing some rapid reactions to the 80-plus prospects in attendance. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks when we break down the day’s performers, position by position.

Of all the statistical measurements taken, the most impressive on the day goes to OF Nicky Giamarusti (Notre Dame, 2021) and his event-best 6.55 laser-timed 60-yard dash. The fleet-footed outfielder increased his time by three-tenths of a second from the last time we saw him in February (6.86). 

The only other sub-7.00 runner was Ethan Bowers (Vernon Hills, 2021) at 6.86. Bowers had an even more impressive improvement since his last PBR event four months ago when he crossed the finish line at 7.32, laser-timed. 

Two other 2021s, Jeremy Fox (Riverside-Brookfield) and Ben Hess (Charleston), tied for the top fastball velocity at 85 mph. Tyler Conklin (Kaneland, 2021) proved that he not only has arm strength across the diamond (86 mph), but he also finished second in fastball velocity on the mound (84 mph).

The catcher from Elmwood park – Chris Akers (2021) – produced the highest exit velocity at the event, hitting 93 mph off a tee.

Zamaurion Hatcher (Kenwood, 2021) easily took the crown in highest outfield velocity by throwing 87 mph darts to home. The highly athletic outfielder continues to impress each time we see him and should have no problem sticking in the center field grass moving forward.

Finally, C Sebastian Cabeza (Kaneland, 2021) has the look and physical ability to be a real threat behind the dish. Cabeza posted the top pop time at the event.
