Underclass Trials - North: Blast Motion Board

Diego Solares
Staff Writer, Associate Scout

On June 8, the PBR Illinois team hosted players ranging from the classes of 2023 through 2025 at The MAX facility in McCook for its Underclass Trials - North showcase.

As the Illinois scout team began to break down a lot of the talent being seen for the first time, there were a lot of takeaways. This event previewed what the northern part of the state has to look forward to in years to come.

We published our Quick Hits from the event shortly after, providing a few highlight performances that stood out on Wednesday. Earlier today we published our TrackMan findings, and we published the traditional stat leaderboards last week with added analysis on more of the event's top performers.

Today, with the help of our Blast Motion sensors, we're analyzing the swing metrics measured at this open event.

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

BAT SPEED (AVERAGE)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Vincent Ippolito IL Willowbrook 2025 C 69.2 mph
2 Jack Rocen IL Cary Grove 2024 SS 68.9 mph

5 Caleb McBurnie IL Bradley-Bourbonnais 2024 C 67.4 mph
6 Cal Darling IL Bradley-Bourbonnais 2024 OF 67.3 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

ROTATIONAL ACCELERATION (PEAK & AVERAGE)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Daniel Kilmer FL IMG Academy 2023 C 28.7 g
2 Carter Storti IL Lemont 2023 SS 26.6 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Daniel Kilmer FL IMG Academy 2023 C 23.3 g
2 Carter Storti IL Lemont 2023 SS 21.6 g
3 Colin Geier IL Fenwick 2024 LHP 19.5 g
4 Caleb McBurnie IL Bradley-Bourbonnais 2024 C 19.5 g
5 Terrell Carpenter IL Thornwood 2024 OF 19.1 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
