SS Bobby Witt Jr. (Colleyville Heritage HS, TX) continues his reign as the top prospect in the updated 2019 Overall Rankings—and he will hold onto it through June’s MLB Draft. Witt has been sensational so far this spring, showing no ill effects of the pressure that can mount as the highest profiled prep prospect, and he has actually surpassed expectations. For four years, the athletic shortstop has consistently proven himself in competition while continuing to sharpen his game and make advancements. His skill level is matched only by his makeup and will to win, which will only excite the future organization that selects him even more, as it is more than likely that he will hear his name called very early in the first round.

Beyond Witt’s prowess as the top prospect, the 2019 class is quickly taking shape as the MLB Draft creeps closer. The warm weather states have quickly compiled a significant amount of games while their counterparts up north clear away the snow, and begin to get outside for scrimmages and games. Led by the hundreds of “boots on the ground” that are part of PBR’s Ground Forces, preseason events gave a great look at the advancements made by players over the course of the offseason, and led to some movement throughout the overall list.

JJ Goss (March, 2019)

While much of the top stayed the same, RHP J.J. Goss (Cypress Ranch HS, TX), 3B Brett Baty (Lake Travis HS, TX), and RHP Josh Wolf (St. Thomas HS, TX) all saw their stock rise. The Texas trio has created significant buzz early this spring. Goss has been electric, routinely missing barrels with his 91-94 fastball and devastating, low-80s slider, and looks the part of a future starter. Baty, while splitting time on the hardwood, began the year 20-for-36 (.556) with seven home runs, and has quickly emerged as one of the premier power bats in the high school class. Finally, Wolf’s ability to pound a heavy, mid-90s fastball to the bottom of the zone effortlessly, and his high upside, makes him one of the top arms in the country.

Brett Baty (February, 2019)

Beyond the Lone Star State, there was still plenty of movement throughout the top 100. Georgia products, SS Nasim Nunez (Collins HIll HS, GA) has utilized his speed and athleticism to dazzle, and RHP Alex McFarlane (Habersham Central HS, GA), has been one of the most intriguing arms of the class given his high-ceiling and whippy arm that produces mid-90s fastballs to go along with a sharp slider.

Four of the highest risers were seen at PBR’s Super 60 in February, and impressed the likes of more than 200 MLB scouts who will be tracking them closely throughout the spring. CIF Blake Robertson (Edmond Santa Fe HS, OK), RHP Mason Auer (Kickapoo HS, MO), OF Kendal Ewell (Marist HS, IL), and OF Jack Frank (Strongville HS, OH) each put themselves firmly on the map as draft prospects.

Robertson’s smooth, left-handed swing produced effortless power at the event, and at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, he still shows signs of continuing adding strength, and could find even more in the future.

Auer, whose athleticism also makes him an intriguing position player, was up to 96 mph at the event showcasing an impressively quick arm. His sharp, upper-70s curveball could ultimately separate him on the mound where he has only recently shifted to.

Ewell oozes athleticism at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, and ran a 6.53 60-yard dash to go along with a 102 mph exit velocity off the tee. His potential to combine speed and power at the next level will likely bring plenty of eyes this spring.

Kendal Ewell (February, 2019)

Frank is physically gifted with defined, proportional strength throughout a 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame. A 6.51 runner in the 60-yard dash, he utilizes a strong bottom hand while hitting from the left side some gap to gap power. As a speedy left-handed hitter with a chance to stick in centerfield, Frank could see his stock rise even higher this spring.
