Today marks the eighth Power 25 update of the season after yet another busy week of games. 

No. 1 Saint Viator continues their special season with another perfect week going 4-0 and pushing their overall record to 28-1. They play Marist on Monday evening for the East Suburban Catholic League Championship game. Two-way standouts, C/RHP Tony Pluta (Arizona commit) and SS/RHP Casey Hintz (Arizona commit), were named Co-Players of the Year in the East Suburban Catholic League as well. 

No. 2 Brother Rice matched Saint Viator this week with their 28th win of the season after going a perfect 5-0 pushing their record to 28-4 on the year while playing, in our minds, the toughest schedule in the state. The Crusaders knocked off Marist, Lemont, Loyola and St. Laurence this past week and look battle tested and ready to make a run in 4A.

CLIMBING

+ No. 3 Edwardsville (27-3) - The Tigers of Edwardsville are coming off a strong 3-0 week and slide up a spot to No. 3 in the Power 25. They knocked off a talented Freeburg squad 11-3, Francis Howell (MO) 4-0 and Jerseyville 7-3 on the week and now sit at 27 wins, one of the highest totals in the state. A busy week lies ahead with two conference games against rival No. 11 O’Fallon and single game with No. 19 Triad on Friday and Springfield on Saturday. 

+ No. 4 Lockport (26-3) - The Porters continue to impress and move up a spot as well after a perfect 5-0 week. Wins over Sandburg, Stagg, Marist, Glenbrook South and Lemont have the moving in the right direction with the playoffs around the corner. Last week’s PBR Player of the Week, 2023 Anthony Martinez, has been carrying the load as of late and had another big week once again, hitting .500 with a number of extra base hits and five RBI. 

+ No. 5 Mundelein (21-3) -The Mustangs move into the Top-five for the first time all season long after a 3-0 week that featured two, one-run wins. Mundelein took down Lake Forest 15-4, 6-5 and Antioch 4-3. Mundelein jumps two spots as a result. 

+ No. 6 Huntley (24-4) - The Red Raiders are yet another team who had a full slate of games last week and came through it unscathed. Huntley went 5-0 and had an impressive offensive week scoring 46 runs over those five games while limiting opponents to nine runs. Huntley is up four spots in this weeks update.

+ No. 12 Lincoln-Way East (19-5) - The Griffins, like a few other teams on the rise, went undefeated in their five games last week with the most impressive win coming against Grayslake Central 7-4 on the road. They also took two games from Bolingbrook and two from Sandburg. The Griffins offense put up 11+ runs in four-of-the-five games this week and outscored opponents 60-17 in total. The Griffins move up three spots this week.

+ No. 14 Naperville Central (20-5) - The RedHawks have been hot as of late, winning 11 of their last 12 games. They swept their final three conference series to share the DuPage Valley Conference regular season title with Neuqua. Vanderbilt commit, C Colin Barczi, has been the leading hitter throughout the spring, currently boasting a .493 BA with 11 home runs, 25 walks and 24 RBI’s. The RedHawks are up three spots in the most recent update.

+ No. 15 St. Joseph-Ogden (31-2) - The Spartans just keep on rolling and look like they will be a favorite to take home the 2A state title. They had another perfect week, this time going 5-0 and jumped up four more spots in the rankings. The Spartans outscored opponents on the week 49-8.

+ No. 16 Normal University (25-6) - After a loss to No. 1 Saint Viator on April 16th the Pioneers sat at 8-5 overall. Since that date, they are 17-1 with their only loss coming on May 4th to defending 3A state champs Springfield by a score of 2-1. The Pioneers are as hot as any team in the state and will be a scary matchup for any 3A opponent come playoff time. This past week they went 7-0 with wins over Springfield, Jacksonville, Bloomington, East Peoria and Springfield Lanphier. They are up six spots and sit as high in the Power 25, as they have, since the Preseason Countdown. 

+ No. 18 Glenwood (24-6) - Another Central Illinois squad that has been rolling as of late is Glenwood. They are 17-3 in their last 20 games and are coming off a perfect 3-0 week where they outscored opponents 43-0. They also have a 3-0 win over No. 3 under their belt recently and move up three spots into the top-20 for the first time this season.

SINKING

+ No. 7 St. Laurence (25-6) - The Vikings have been through the gauntlet of the Chicago Catholic League Blue these past few weeks and last week they went 2-2 with their two losses coming at the hands of No. 2 Brother Rice (10-0 and 13-11). As a result, they are down four spots to No. 7 but still boast an impressive 25-6 record and should be considered one of the favorites in class 3A. 

+ No. 10 Belleville East (24-6) - The Lancers are another team dropping four spots after an up-and-down 2-2 week. They knocked off Mattoon and Collinsville but Collinsville knocked them off 4-3 and No. 19 Triad took a game from them by the score of 12-10. The Lancers are still one of the teams you would not want to see in the postseason, given their depth of arms, especially when the top junior in the state, RHP Zander Mueth (Ole Miss), is on the mound. 

+ No. 17 St. Charles East (18-5-1) - The Saints had an uneven 3-2 week and slid five spots. They took 2-of-3 from Batavia and knocked off Wheaton North 9-4. However, a 5-4 loss to crosstown rival St. Charles North and 6-5 loss to Batavia have them trending down the Power 25. The Saints will stay busy this week with five games on the schedule with the first two coming against conference foe Wheaton North. 

+ No. 25 McHenry (22-7) - The Warriors were another team with an up-and-down week and they barely hang onto a Power 25 spot, sliding down seven spots. They went 4-2 on the week with their two losses coming to Boylan Catholic and Grayslake North. They also knocked off Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central and took two games from Burlington Central. Their next big matchup will come on Tuesday against a Barrington club who sits at 20-4-2 and on the cusp of the Power 25.

NEW TO POWER 25

+ No. 19 Triad (26-5) - A big 12-10 win over No. 10 Belleville East went a long way in the Knights 4-1 week, pushing them back into the Power 25 for the second time this season. Triad, racked up 26 wins on the season and earned the No. 1 seed in the 3A Triad Sectional. This past week they took down Civic Memorial twice, Alton Marquette, the aforementioned Belleville East and their lone blemish was a one-run loss to Mater Dei. Triad has all kinds of competitive arms at their disposal and is led by a strong senior core of position players which will make them one of the favorites to make it to Joliet in 3A.

+ No. 20 South Elgin (21-3) - The Storm find themselves in the Power 25 for the first time this season after a perfect 5-0 week which pushed their overall record to 21-3. On the week, South Elgin outscored opponents by a total of 46-14. Positionally, they’re led by a trio of seniors, OF Ben Karpowicz (Illinois State), C/OF Jackson Bessette (Illinois-Chicago) and Owen Cutinello (Elgin CC)

+ No. 23 Stevenson (23-7) - Another team who enters the Power 25 again after a couple week layoff is the Patriots from Stevenson. Stevenson is another team who has been hot as of late. On April 21st, Stevenson was 11-5 and has since gone 12-2 to push their record to 23-7. Last week they picked up three wins with their only loss coming to No. 1 Saint Viator by the score of 7-6. This week should continue to shed light on just how dangerous this Stevenson team is as they have two games scheduled against conference foe No. 13 Libertyville and single games against Whitney Young and Evanston.

+ No. 24 Maroa-Forsyth (26-1) - After a one week layoff Maroa-Forsyth is back in the Power 25. The Trojans boast one of the best records in the state and had another perfect week going 4-0. Their two most impressive wins came over Monticello 4-3 and Father McGivney 8-6. Their lone blemish on the season came to Mahomet-Seymour, who is knocking on the door of a Power 25 spot in their own right. INF/RHP Ethan Willoughby (SIU-Edwardsville) continues to show well offensively and on the mound.
