Updated Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

Today marks the fifth Power 25 update of the season after yet another loaded week of games. St. Laurence, remains at the top despite splitting with No. 5 St. Rita, in a tightly contested two-game Chicago Catholic-Blue series. Both games were decided by one run, the first being an 8-7 St. Rita victory in eight innings.

No teams had weeks, warranting a fall out of the Power 25. Therefore, a number of bubble teams who had solid weeks, are unfortunately still on the outside looking in. Some notables are Normal Community, Belleville West, Providence Catholic, Willowbrook, Rochester, Tuscola, Dunlap and Galesburg. Rochester (17-5-1), in particular, swept a two-game conference series from No. 15 Normal University but also lost 12-8 to Mahomet-Seymour and 7-6 to Taylorville.

Check out the rest of the movement in the Power 25 below.

CLIMBING

+ Lincoln-Way East - The Griffins had another impressive week and are up to their highest ranking of the spring, No. 2. Lincoln-Way East is currently 18-3 and had a 3-0 week. The Griffins defeated Sandburg 13-1, Illiana Christian 5-4 and No. 9 Lockport 7-3.

+ Edwardsville - The Tigers are another team on the rise, up to No. 4, their highest ranking of the season. Edwardsville, now 19-3, went 4-0 on the week. The Tigers knocked off Alton 5-2 and 6-5 as well as Civic Memorial 5-2 and Trenton-Wesclin 20-6. Looking ahead, the Tigers have a crucial two-game conference series this week against Belleville West (16-3).

+ Huntley - The Red Raiders, last season Class 4A state runner-up, keep climbing the list and now sit at No. 6. Now 18-4 on the season, Huntley swept a three-game Fox Valley conference series in convincing fashion, last week against Jacobs. Huntley outscored Jacobs 28-6 in the three games and are winners of eight straight.

+ Warren - The Blue Devils have now won 17 straight games and are currently 20-2 on the season. Warren, now No. 8 in the Power 25 was 3-0 this past week, beating Zion Benton twice; 15-1 & 16-4 and Lake Forest once, 10-6.

+ Nazareth - The biggest rise of the week belongs to the Roadrunners of Nazareth, up 11 spots to No. 12. Nazareth, 16-3-1 on the season, went 3-1 on the week. Nazareth split with No. 3 Joliet Catholic, winning 4-3 and losing 2-0. They also beat Homewood-Flossmoor 8-7 and Crossroads Christian Academy 10-0. On the season, Nazareth has key wins over Joliet Catholic, two over Marist, Lane Tech and others.

+ St. Charles North - The North Stars had three tough DuKane Conference games this past week and won them all. The North Stars came back late to beat St. Charles East 12-10 and took two wins from Lake Park by the score of 6-1 and 5-2. St. Charles North, now 14-6, climbed five spots, up to No. 14.

FALLING

+ Lockport - The Porters, who have spent almost the entire season in the Top five, had arguably their worst week of the season and drop to No. 9 as a result. Lockport went 0-2 on the week, losing to Homewood-Flossmoor 6-5 and No. 2 Lincoln-Way East 7-3. They are currently 18-5 on the season.

+ Brother Rice - The Crusaders fell five spots to No. 10 after a 1-2 week. Brother Rice split with Chicago Catholic-Blue foe Mount Carmel and lost 12-6 to a hot Maine South squad. The 16-8 Crusaders have a huge week ahead with two games against No. 1 St. Laurence.

+ Normal University - The Pioneers had an up-and-down 1-2 week and now sit at No. 15, a five spot drop. The Pioneers were swept in a two-game conference series against Rochester (2-0 & 2-1) but bounced back and beat No. 16 Normal West 10-8.

+ Metea Valley - Metea Valley, one of the states biggest surprises this season, had one of their toughest weeks of the year so far and dropped eight spots to No. 19. The Mustangs went 1-2 on the week, splitting with Waubonsie Valley and losing 11-0 against No. 7 Neuqua Valley. It does not get any easier moving forward as the 17-3 Mustangs have two more games against Neuqua this week and one against a quality Oswego East squad.
