2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: CASTLE KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Curt Welch

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 26-4

Conference (2022 Record):  9-0

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 3/3

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Frontline Starting Pitching

  • Pitching Depth

Top Players:

Outlook: Castle will be led by one of the state’s top right-handed arms, Auburn recruit Cameron Tilly. Tilly returns after posting a perfect 7-0 record as a junior, with a 0.68 ERA and 71 punch outs. Tilly will be joined atop the starting rotation by Sophomore Will Coleman, a Missouri recruit, who went 6-1 with a 1.91 ERA as a freshman, to create one of the toughest 1-2 combinations in 4A baseball. Senior Carter Walker and Junior Ryan Lambert are also quality arms that will be counted on to provide depth to the Knights’ rotation. Tilly and Coleman will also be two of the biggest contributors on the offensive side of the ball after they both hit over .300 in 2022. Senior Drew Behny returns in the outfield with tons of varsity experience as well.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Brownsburg Bulldogs

Head Coach: Dan Roman

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 21-8

Conference (2022 Record):  10-4

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 1/4

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching

  • Defense

Top Players:

Outlook: Brownsburg returns a strong core of pitchers from last year’s group that went 21-8. The Bulldogs return their top three arms from a season ago in Seniors Walker Brodt (4-3 / 3.44 ERA), Mason Tibbs (3-2 / 2.85 ERA), Alec Murphy (4-0 / 2.72 ERA). Sophomore Drew Jennings will provide depth to the bullpen after he saw varsity time on the mound as a freshman. Offensively, Brownsburg will be led by Senior Coulter Hamilton, who hit .329 with 7 2B and 4 HRs as a junior. Hamilton is the lone returning starter, so Brownsburg will need contributions from newcomers such as Sophomores Colin McNeer and PJ Fry. Except Senior Nathan Walsh to hit up near the top of the lineup as well.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: VALPARAISO VIKINGS

Head Coach: Todd Evans

Class: 4A

Top Players:

Outlook: Valparaiso will be led by 2025 Louisville recruit Caden Crowell, an all-conference selection as a freshman in 2022. Crowell and Senior RHP Jimmie Shifflett will give the Vikings pitching rotation plenty of talent at the top. Aside from those two, Coach Todd Evans will have a number of young arms that he will expect to step up and contribute out of the bullpen. Offensively, the Vikings return a group of four hitters with varsity experience. Crowell, Seniors Miles Cvelbar and Ian Wilson, and Junior Andres Guzman were all key contributors to last year’s squad, and will all need to take another step forward this season for the Vikings to have success. Expect Sophomore Max Reaume, Junior Nate Brumfield, and Freshman Trent Gill to all step in and contribute to the Vikings offense as well.
