2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Cathedral Fighting Irish

Head Coach: Ed Freije

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 18-11-2

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/2

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Team Speed

Top Players: 

Outlook: Cathedral may have one of the strongest offensive units in 4A with six returning starters from their 2022 State runner-up team. Senior Kyuss Gargett returns at SS after hitting .382 with 8 2B, 8 3B, and 3 HR as a junior. Seniors Carson Johnson (.387 / 20 RBI) and David Ayers (.238 / 6 2B) will join Gargett and Junior JT Stiner (.356 avg / 9 2B) to create a dangerous top of the order. Junior Patrick Mazur (.341 / 8 2B) had a breakout sophomore year and will look to replicate that success again this season. Sophomore Eli Bennett returns after starting as a freshman and has the potential to put together a massive season. Look for Senior Griffin Sinsabaugh and Sophomores Zander Carnahan and Bo Cooper to provide depth to the Fighting Irish lineup. On the mound, Bennett returns the most experience with 13.2 IP last season. Ayers and Sophomore Ethan Dorsey will join Bennett to make up the starting rotation.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Westfield Rocks

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 19-9

Conference (2022 Record):  8-6

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 4/4

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Starting Pitching

  • Defense

  • Hitting

Top Players: 

Outlook: Westfield returns a solid core of players from last year's group that finished 19-9. Starting pitching will be a strength for the Westfield Rocks, with Senior Jacob Culp expected to be atop the starting rotation after going 4-1 with a 1.79 ERA in 2022. Junior Ty Anderson (17 IP / 2-2 record) and Senior Seth Nanna (2-1 record / 2.74 ERA) will also be in the starting rotation as Coach Ryan Bunnell expects these two to log plenty of innings on the mound. Expect Junior Preston Tamm to add depth to the Rocks’ pitching staff as well. Offensively, the Rocks will be led by Senior Catcher Collin Lindsey, who hit .380 with 6 HR’s in his junior campaign. Junior Brayden Hibler and Senior Evan Russ (.320 avg / 8 XBH) are returning starters who will be expected to take on bigger roles in 2023. Anderson, as well as Junior Alex Rudolph and Sophomore Ian Wilson, will all be counted on to be impactful in the Rocks' lineup.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Mt. Vernon Marauders

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 17-10

Conference (2022 Record):  12-2

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/6

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching

  • Defense

  • Team Speed

Top Players: 

Outlook: Mt. Vernon returns a roster filled with talent and will look to build upon their 17-10 record from a season ago. Senior RHP/SS Eli Bridenthal will be the leader of the group after having a big junior season both on the mound and offensively. Expect 2024 RHP Cameron Sullivan to have a big junior season on the mound as well, coming off his commitment to Notre Dame this offseason. Senior Joseph Wilson and Junior Nick Heitman will bolster the rotation, giving the Marauders one of the most talented rotations in the state. Offensively, Seniors Gavin Johnston (.343), Russell Weaver (.362), and Konnor Scheidt (.314) along with Junior DJ Scheumann (.300) will give Mt. Vernon plenty of offensive production in 2023. Junior Nathan Criss brings back experience to the lineup as well as out of the bullpen. Mt. Vernon also expects Junior OF Joshua James, a transfer, to make an immediate impact.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Homestead Spartans

2022 Record: 24-7

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 3/6

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching Staff

  • Defense

Top Players: 

Outlook: The Spartans will rely on a deep, talented pitching staff with plenty of experience in 2023. Junior Alex Graber and Senior Griffin Tinkel will be atop the starting rotation for Homestead after the two combined to pitch over 80 innings in 2022, posting a combined 12-2 record with over 100 punch outs. Seniors Jake Goode and Logann Tuttle return after providing quality depth to the pitching staff a season ago. Junior Mason Weaver is expected to see more innings on the bump in 2023 after posting a 0.64 ERA in 2022. Offensively, the Spartans only return 3 starters from 2022, but will look to Seniors Bryce Yoder, Goode, and Justin Goskowicz to pace the offensive group. Coach Nick Byall expects Sophomores Luke Neiswonger and Luke Riha, as well as Junior Caleb Bradford, to step in and contribute immediately to the lineup.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Noblesville Millers

Head Coach: Justin Keever

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 14-15

Conference (2022 Record):  7-7

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 5/4

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching

  • Defense

  • Young Talent

Top Players: 

Outlook: Noblesville will rely on a strong pitching staff in 2023, led by Senior Bryce Riggs. Riggs struck out 60 batters in 42.2 IP in 2022, and will be joined in the starting rotation by 2025 Notre Dame recruit Joe Glander. Juniors Nolan Decker and Lucas Stephen both posted solid numbers in 2022 and they round out a quality starting rotation. Sophomore INF Trevor Corbett returns to lead the lineup after batting .406 as a freshman. Decker, Riggs, and Senior Catcher Jacob Edwards also return to add experience to the 2023 lineup. We expect Freshman Aiden Reynolds, an Indiana recruit, to be a key addition to the Millers lineup. Sophomore Aiden Ramsey is another underclassmen expected to contribute on the offensive side of the ball.
