2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Carmel Greyhounds

Head Coach: Ty Neal

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 18-9

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 4/3

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching Depth

  • Defense

  • Team Speed

Top Players: 

Outlook: Carmel will look to lean on the depth of their pitching rotation in 2023. Senior Cam Heaney brings back the most experience on the mound after pitching 43 innings and allowing just a 0.65 ERA in 2022. Talented Juniors in Max Winders and Adam Buczkowski will look to take on big roles in 2023. Seniors Carter Klein and Dylan Zenor return with plenty of varsity experience on the mound. Coach Ty Neal expects Junior James Charland and Senior Drew Fouts to compete for innings on the mound as well. Offensively, the Greyhounds will look to a pair of Power 5 recruits to lead the charge in Junior OF Hunter Snow (Baylor) and Sophomore INF JD Stein (Louisville). Seniors Case Sullivan and Tripp Schroeder are returning starters who will be looking to improve upon their respective junior campaigns. Buczkowski, Charland, Fouts, along with Senior Tim Haas and Junior Tyler Walkey, will also be key contributors in the Greyhounds' lineup.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Mooresville Pioneers

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 27-4

Conference (2022 Record):  13-1

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 4/6

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Experience

  • Pitching

Top Players: 

Outlook: The Pioneers return plenty of pieces from their sectional championship team from 2022, led by Junior Indiana recruit Hogan Denny. Denny had a huge sophomore season, batting .412 with 10 2B, 10 HR, and 44 SB, while also posting a 0.85 ERA with 6 wins and 6 saves on the mound. Mooresville will also look to Cincinnati recruit Brendin Oliver to log plenty of innings on the mound after he posted a 5-1 record in 2022. Oliver and Denny will be joined by a group of Juniors in Kaleb Kestler, Bryce Brabender, Deklan Thompson, Selby Barton, and Levi Dorn, along with talented Freshman Hudson Devaughan, to make up the Pioneer pitching staff. Thompson (.271), Barton, Kestler, Brabender, and Dorn will all be expected to provide depth to the lineup after they all contributed at the varsity level last season. Expect Senior Judah Hennessy (.253 / 10 XBH) to be a spark plug near the top of the Pioneer lineup. Also, expect Freshman Tyler Denny to work his way into the lineup to make immediate contributions.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Fishers TIGERS

2022 Record: 22-8

Conference (2022 Record):  12-2

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/3

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Big Game Experience

  • Pitching Depth

  • Athletic Lineup 

Top Players: 

Outlook: Fishers returns a deep group of arms and an athletic lineup that will put them in contention to be one of the top teams in the state yet again. Junior Jack Brown returns to lead the Tigers after posting a 2.89 ERA with a 5-2 record in 2022. Brown will give Fishers a chance to win anytime he takes the mound, however Junior Gavin Kuzniewski and Senior Kyle Manship put up quality numbers in 2022 and round out a very strong starting rotation. Seniors Jacob Kohlman, Nick Schnaiter, Luke Grubb, and Juniors Ben Hammond and Owen Backofen will provide Fishers plenty of depth coming out of the bullpen. After hitting .429 in 2022, Jack Brown will lead the charge offensively yet again. Senior Outfielder Carson Dunn returns after hitting .395 as a junior. Aside from Brown and Dunn, Fishers returns a solid group of position players with varsity experience to the 2023 squad, including Senior Infielders Gavin Clayton and Quinn Seefeldt, Junior Catcher Caulin Brown, and Sophomore Infielder Huston Dunn.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Fort Wayne Carroll Chargers

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 26-5

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 8/5

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Experienced Lineup

  • Pitching Depth

  • Defense

Top Players: 


Outlook: The Chargers return a core group of players from their 2022 sectional championship roster, with 8 position players and 5 pitchers returning. Carroll will look to a trio of seniors with plenty of experience in Will Worrell, Michael Dierckman, and Cameron Saunders to carry the load on the mound. These three combined to give the Chargers 109.1 innings pitched in 2022, with a 16-2 combined record. Offensively, the lineup will be led by Senior SS Andrew Sinish, an Indiana Wesleyan signee, who hit .371 with 8 2B in 2022. Junior INF Conner Barkel and Senior Outfielders Daniel Kirk and Gabe Starks will all be key contributors in the Chargers’ lineup as well. Expect Sophomore Jaxon Sparks to contribute both on the mound, and in the middle of the Chargers’ lineup.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Evansville North Huskies

Head Coach: Jeremy Jones

Class: 4A

2022 Record: 23-6

Conference (2022 Record):  8-2

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 7/2

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Hitting

  • Defense

  • Athleticism 

Top Players: 

Outlook: Evansville North will rely on a very strong offensive lineup in 2023 after hitting .336 as a team in 2022 and returning the majority of that lineup. The Huskies return a dangerous group of hitters at the top of the order in Seniors Aaron Nehls (.341), Rylee Singleton (.460), Luke Diekmann (.288), and Junior Cole Decker (.318). Expect Seniors Landon Shellhaas, Rece Grisham, and Ethan King to provide quality depth after they all provided contributions to the lineup in 2022. Expect newcomers Brayden Huebner and Gabe Wilke to add to an already deep lineup. On the mound, Evansville North will be led by a couple talented Seniors in Luke Diekmann and Mitchell Renfro, who both have plenty of varsity experience.
