No. 22 Kevin Jones is Dominant, Portage Routs Griffith 10-0

By Ben Grossberg

GRIFFITH – Kevin Jones and the Portage Indians scored early and often against the Griffith Panthers on Thursday afternoon. The Northern Illinois commit was also dominant on mound sitting in the mid to upper 80's during his outing.

Portage didn’t waste any time getting the offense started jumping on the board with two in the first inning. Chris Klenk, a Cincinnati commit, and Sam Schest drew walks to start the game and after a wild pitch Jones brought in the first run with a RBI groundout. Peter Psomadelis then followed that up with a fly out deep enough to score Schest from third.

In the second after a walk and two bunt singles, Schest brought across a runner with a groundout to give Portage a 3-0 lead. Jared Ford delivered in the third inning hitting a double into left center field bringing Hunter Thorn in tow score.

Four runs were more than enough for Jones, who only faced a jam once in the game. In the second Griffith got a double and walk to start the inning, but Jones would strike out the next three batters to end any threat. The three strikeouts were the start of a stretch during which Jones would strike out eight of the 11 batters he faced. Jones finished the day with a line of four innings pitched, two hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts.

In the fifth Portage took advantage of two Griffith errors to bust the game open with a six run inning. Portage loaded the bases with no outs and a groundball back to the pitcher looked to hurt any rally, but the throw to the catcher was low and all the runners were safe. A groundball to second was mishandled allowing another run to score and keeping the bases loaded. Schest brought in a run with a sacrifice fly and Jones brought in two more with a double over the center fielder’s head. Psomadelis brought in Jones for the tenth run of the game with a single.

Griffith would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth against reliever Hunter Kraynak, but Kraynak was able to get a strikeout to end the inning and secure a 10-0 win for Portage.
