Michigan Snags Two 2018's

By Phil Wade

Indiana Executive Director

Michigan head coach Erik Bakich and the Wolverine baseball program have crossed state borders and put their mark on Indiana's 2018 class.

In the last two days the Wolverines have received commitments from two of central Indiana's top players in Zionsville short stop Riley Bertram and Carmel third baseman Jack Van Remortel.  The last player from Indiana to make their way to Ann Arbor was 2013 right-handed pitcher Mac Lozer from North Central HS.

Riley Bertram
Bertram, ranked No. 5 in Indiana's 2018 class, is a 5-foot-11, 165 pounder with quick, athletic defensive actions.  At the Preseason Underclass Preview Showcase last February, it was apparent that Bertram was a high end prospect, showcasing soft hands with an advanced feel for the position.  He possesses plenty of arm strength across the field and showed the ability to hit from both sides of the plate.

Jack Van Remortel

We first saw Van Remortel early this spring where he earned the starting spot at third base as a freshman at Carmel.  He possesses a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds and displayed solid actions in the field with sure hands.  At the Underclass Games in June, the physical right-handed hitter showcased projectable power to his pull-side with good rhythm and consistently got to extension.

With Bertram and Van Remortel picking schools, Indiana's 2018 class now has a total of seven commits; (3) Big Ten, (3) ACC, (1) Big 12.
