Trey Ball from New Castle HS Heading to Texas

Trey Ball is an athletic 6-foot-6 inch, 175 pound left-handed pitcher from New Castle High School.  Ball frequently lights up radar guns with a fastball that has been clocked as high as 93 mph and shows an intimidating presence on the mound with his 6’6” frame.  Though he is continuing to refine his mechanics and working hard to become more consistent in the strike zone with his fastball, Ball is expected to have a huge junior year at New Castle and with his summer team, the Indiana Prospects.

Ball increased his national stock this past summer and fall when he participated in the Area Code games in California and the East Coast Showcase in Lakeland, Florida.  “Being a part of these two events was amazing.  The talent at the Area Code games was tremendous and being only one of two sophomores at the East Coast Showcase was a great experience,” Ball told Prep Baseball Report Indiana.  Ball was impressive at both events, showcasing his tools not only as a pitcher, but at the plate as well.  Last season he hit .360 for New Castle.

The University of Texas is the winningest college baseball program in history.  The Longhorns possess six National Championships, 34 College World Series appearances, and a renowned coaching staff. These were all major reasons for Ball’s decision to play at Texas, but the atmosphere on campus and at football and baseball games were what sealed the deal.  “I attended a football game wh

en I went on my visit and the atmosphere was incredible,” says Ball, ”the coaches kept telling me that this is where I want to be and what I want to be a part of, it makes you want to succeed every day. The fans demand it from you.”

“I’ve watched YouTube videos of Texas baseball games and the fans and atmosphere at those games seemed so electric.  There are busses down the right field line and people stand on top of them to watch the games.” Ball is rated as one of the top pitchers in the country, but is expected to get an equal opportunity at both pitching and hitting at Texas.

Ball gives a lot of credit to the Indiana Prospects organization and his head coach for the Prospects, Shane Stout. “Without Coach Stout, I don’t know if I get the opportunity to play at Texas,” he told Prep Baseball Report Indiana, “he’s helped me out tremendously, and don’t think I’d be where I’m at without him.”

“Trey is the type of player that’s willing to do whatever it takes to win; he’s not a selfish player.  On the mound he’s calm and works at his pace with focus.  He doesn’t care if it’s a strikeout or a ground ball out, he just wants to get the team back in the dugout,” says Stout.

While Ball gives a lot of credit to the Indiana Prospects, his dad had the most influence on him as a baseball player.  “My Dad certainly taught me a lot about the game and was a big factor in my development.”

New Castle had a disappointing end to their season last year, but is returning 7 starters, including Ball.  With Ball as the No. 1 and up and coming talent behind him, expect New Castle to make a run in the IHSAA State Tournament.

Ball’s summer team, the Indiana Prospects, is one of the most talented travel baseball teams in country.  The Prospects roster to date has seven Division 1 commitments, and expects to have more by the end of the summer.  Included on the roster is Indiana’s No. 2 ranked prospect in the class of 2013 Josh Rogers of New Albany HS, a recent University of Louisville commit.  Ball and Rogers make up one of the best 1-2 left-handed pitching combinations in the country.

Ball is continuing to work hard this off-season, working with a professional trainer and getting pitching and hitting lessons to help improve his game.  “My goal for the upcoming season pitching wise is to get better control of my fastball and staying in the zone, as that’s been my biggest issue.  Hitting wise I’d like to become more consistent.”

Ball will join former Indiana Prospect and Cathedral HS star pitcher, Dillon Peters, at the University of Texas.
