SEYMOUR, IN--The second ranked Floyd Central Highlanders earned a 4-0 victory in the opening round of sectionals last night over 19th ranked Jeffersonville.  Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings of play.

In the bottom half of the third, Floyd Central received their first hits of the game on consecutive singles from senior’s Charlie Loveall and Aiden Cora setting up runners on first and second with one out.  The second out of the inning came off of senior Trey Fulton’s fielder’s choice to short stop, but advanced Loveall to home plate, giving the Highlanders the 1-0 lead.

The Highlander’s scored three more times in fourth and fifth innings.  Senior Brandon Smith homered in the fourth to take the 2-0 lead while Fulton hit a two-run homer in the fifth putting the game out of reach at 4-0.

Senior Kyle Beach got the start for Floyd Central going five innings allowing five hits and one walk while striking out five.  Fulton relieved Beach in the sixth, finishing the last two innings with two strike outs and allowing just one hit.

Freshman right-hander Gabe Bierman earned the start for Jeffersonville in last night’s sectional opener.  Despite taking the loss, Bierman was impressive for a freshman taking on the second ranked team in the state.  Bierman went six strong innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven while allowing four runs, three of which came off the long ball.

The Red Devils actually outhit Floyd Central six to five, but were unable to push any runs across.  Senior catcher Casey Gibson had a strong night offensively, going 2-3 with two doubles.

Floyd Central will take on New Albany, who won 7-6 over Jennings County in the night cap, on Saturday at 3pm in the semi-final.   The winner of that game will face the winner of Seymour/Bedford North Lawrence on Monday at 6pm.
