INDIANAPOLIS---For the second time in two days 4A No. 17 Lawrence Central visited a ranked opponent as No. 3 Cathedral played host for a much anticipated non-conference match. The Bears, however, were never able to capture a lead as 2016 LHP Will Conway gave up just two hits and worked around an inning of defensive let down to give the Irish a perfect start to the season.

Lawrence Central rolled out ace and Florida State commit Jarrett Montgomery to the hill. With a handful of talent evaluators behind the backstop the strong righty sat 90-92 touching 93 that he kept in on hitters hands striking out six in 3.2 innings of work.

2015 IF Adam Neal (IPFW) put the Irish up early with an RBI double and came around to score on two consecutive wild pitches. The Irish kept the two run advantage until the third when Montgomery lifted a bases loaded sac fly to right scoring a run and advancing Kenny Ogg to third. Ogg later scored as Cathedral bounced one past the catcher.

The momentum was quickly spoiled in the bottom half of the inning as 2015 Wayne State commit Jack Schmidt laced a homerun over the right field fence scoring three and moving Cathedral back ahead 5-2.

Four errors by the Irish in the top of the fourth gave Lawrence Central hope as they got two runs back with two outs in the inning. Dre Davis got a liner through the Irish infield worked a 1st and 3rd baserunning play to score another. This would be the last inning on the score board for the Bears as Cathedral added one more on the way to a 6-4 victory. Schmidt relieved Conway and picked up the save.
