Preseason All State: 2014 Best of the Rest Position Players

Thomas Barbara, OF, Bishop Chatard HS, 2014:

6-foot-3, 175 pound junior possesses a projectable frame.  Uses a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 76 mph from the OF.  Actions need improvement in the field.  At the plate uses a wide base with no stride.  Drops hands during his load and dives towards the baseball.  Bat speed is average with a long, uphill swing path.  Shows some stiffness. 

Logan Beaman, OF, Cardinal Ritter HS, 2014:

5-foot-10, 180 pound junior shows a long arm action and throws over the top at 81 mph with accuracy.  Defensive actions are stiff.  At the plate starts with his hands high and uses a toe tap for timing.  Produces quick bat speed and barrels up most balls.  Recorded an exit velo of 90 mph. 

Drew Bellus, 3B/C, Western HS, 2014:

6-foot-4, 205 pound junior possesses a strong, athletic frame.  Showcased soft hands with a clean exchange.  Across the infield was 81 mph. Defensive actions are choppy.  At the plate hits from a crouch.  The lower half is inconsistent and hits off his backside.  Possesses good bat speed with some projectable power.   Spins out. 

Duncan Boone, OF, Concord HS, 2014:

6-foot, 190 pound junior runs a 7.0 60.  From the OF uses a long arm action and throws over the top at 79 mph.  Moves well but is stiff throughout his actions.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a slight crouch.  Loads back and uses a short stride.  Some use of the lower half.  Bat speed is average.  Loads early, hitting from a stand still position. 

Trevor Bradway, OF, Hagerstown JR/SR HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 170 pound junior runs a 7.08 60.  Arm action is short and  throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 71 mph from the OF.  At the plate starts wide with no stride.  Drops his hands during his load.  Bat drags through the zone during his swing.  Long path to the baseball.  Rotates out. 

Tyler Funkhouser, 3B/SS, Hagerstown HS, 2014:

5-foot-10, 190 pound junior possesses a strong lower half.  Uses a long arm action and throws from a ¾ arm slot at 74 mph across the diamond.  Showcased an average glove.  Fields flat footed.  At the plate stands tall in his setup.  Stride is short. Not much use of his lower half.  Swing plane is level.

Tyler Garzinski, 1B, Plainfield HS, 2014:

6-foot-1, 235 pound left-handed junior fields it well at 1B and was 68 mph across the diamond.  At the plate hits from the left side.  Starts from a crouch.  Stride is short with partial use of the lower half.  Showcased average bat speed with some strength.  Occasionally makes hard contact producing projectable power.  Rhythm is choppy. Produced an exit velo of 86 mph.

Tanner Hampton, MIF, Rochester HS, 2014:

5-foot-9, 155 pound junior is 78 mph across the diamond with carry.  Actions are choppy, and fields it deep.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  At the plate starts open, with a wide base.  Dives towards the baseball during his stride.  Showcased average balance throughout his swing with average bat speed.

Andrew Herrman, 3B, Lawrence North HS, 2014:

6-foot-1, 171 pound junior possesses a good frame.  At 3B uses a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 75 mph.  His hands are average and feet are slow.  Show some stiffness throughout his actions.   At the plate uses a wide base with a short stride.  Hits off his back leg with an uphill swing path. 

Jon Hogg, OF, Boon Grove HS, 2014:

6-foot-4, 180 pound junior runs a 7.13 60.  Arm action is short and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 79 mph.  Projects better on the mound. 

Chris Howe, 3B/OF, Avon HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 160 pound junior shows some arm strength at 79 across the infield.  Showcased an average glove.  Feet are choppy and does not play through the ball.  Fields it deep.  From the OF was 83 mph.  His arm action is long and throws over the top.  At the plate starts open and dives towards the baseball.  Shows above average bat speed, but it decelerates after contact. 

Aaron Hunt, OF, Center Grove HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 175 pound junior runs a 6.84 60.  From the OF uses a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 77 mph.  Showcased average hands and is choppy with his footwork.  At the plate hits from a crouch and drops his hands during his load.  Eye level changes throughout his swing.  Displays some pop potential. 

Grant Moulton, 1B, Lawrence North HS, 2014:

6-foot-3, 175 pound junior possesses a lanky, athletic frame.  Moves well at 1B with an average glove.  Was 65 mph across the diamond.  At the plate starts wide with an open stance.  Wraps during his load.  Bat speed tends to drag through the zone.  Displays a long path to the baseball.  Loses his top hand during contact. 

Evan Nixon, 3B/2B, Carmel HS, 2014:

5-foot-10 inch, 170 pound junior was 73 mph across the diamond using a long arm action.  Tendency to play on his heels and shows some stiffness in his fielding position.   Footwork is choppy, but shows some range and an above average glove at the high school level.  At the plate uses a balanced setup with a long path to the baseball.  His rhythm is stiff, but shows the ability to hit line drives with some pop potential. 

Patrick Norris, OF, Center Grove HS, 2014:

5-foot-9, 155 pound junior runs a 6.75 60.  From the OF uses a long arm action and was 78 mph.  Moves well, with short, quick feet.  At the plate uses a balanced setup with a smooth load.  Tends to drop his hands during his load.  Uses his lower half well with a short stride.  Bat speed is average and showcases good balance throughout his swing. 

Stephen Pinarksi, 3B/RHP, Concord HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 165 pound junior displays above average hands at 3B with average footwork.  He throws over the top with accuracy at 81 mph.  At the plate works from a balanced setup and loads back.  His stride is short with a quick, and has a short path to the baseball.  Mechanics are raw, but produces line drives with some pop. 

Jared Ruth, 2B/OF, Pike HS, 2014:

5-foot-8, 144 pound junior runs a 7.03 60.  Across the diamond was 73 mph.  Shows some athleticism with average hands.  Fields the ball deep.  At the plate uses a balanced setup.  Lower half collapses.  Shows some balance with average bat speed. 

Collin Timmons, OF, Perry Meridian HS, 2014:

6-foot-5, 195 pound junior runs a 7.01 60.  Possesses an athletic frame.  Uses a short arm action and throws over the top at 80 mph with accuracy.  Showcased average hands with good footwork.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup and shows an arm bar during his load.  Dives towards the baseball during his stride.  Displayed good pop. 

Clark Vaughn, 1B/OF, Madison Consolidated HS, 2014:

6-foot-4, 210 pound junior possesses a strong lower half.  At first shows an average glove around the bag.  Has some arm strength at 83 mph across the diamond.  From the OF was 82 mph from a ¾ arm slot.  At the plate uses a high leg kick and over rotates with his lower half.  Swing plane is level.  Pull hitter.  Produced an exit velo of 86 mph. 

Jacob Wilkerson, 3B, Center Grove HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 185 pound junior possesses a strong lower half.  In the field was 66 mph.  Foot work is heavy.  At the plate coils during his load with a bat wrap.  Swing is short and compact producing some bat speed.  Showcased some pop potential. 

Chandler Wilson, OF, Pendleton Heights HS, 2014:

6-foot, 165 pound possesses an athletic frame and runs well posting a 6.80 60 time.  From the OF uses a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 81 mph.  Displays soft hands with a long exchange.  Feet are slow and fields the ball deep.  At the plate uses a balanced setup with choppy rhythm.  Drops his hands during the load producing lift on the ball.
