Senior Biddle Leads Roncalli over Lawrence Central

By Ben Grossberg
Lead Scout, PBR Indiana

Indianapolis, IN – Roncalli hosted Lawrence Central on Thursday and got a quality win for a young team. Senior Drew Biddle got the start on the mound for Roncalli and he limited LC to just six hits over seven innings. He struggled a little in the first giving up three straight hits to start off the game, but got out of the inning allowing just one run. He kept the LC bats fairly quiet the next six innings, not allowing another run until the seventh..

Lawrence Central’s starter, Senior Scott Swingle, cruised through the first three innings, but Roncalli got their offense going in the fourth. Roncalli would score four runs in the frame aided by some costly errors, but also clutch hits. After errors led to Roncalli’s first two runs, Senior Catcher Nick Kuntz came through with a one out RBI triple to  right center field. Kuntz would score when Junior RF Chris Fey singled him in.

Roncalli would add three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Biddle drove in the first run in the fifth with a double to left. Christian Beard would bring in a run with a fielder’s choice and Kuntz picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to right. In the sixth Biddle doubled with one out, after a fly out and a walk sophomore Pauly Milto doubled to left scoring two runs and giving Roncalli a 9-1 lead.

Lawrence Central would scratch across a run in the top of the seventh, but Biddle closed the door on any comeback with his seventh strikeout of the game to give Roncalli a 9-2 victory.

Roncalli – Biddle: W, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 SO; 2-4, 2 2B, R; Kuntz: 2-2, 3B, 2 RBI; Milto: 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI; So. Tyler Schoettle 2-4

Scouting Notes:

Roncalli:

Drew Biddle, RHP/OF, 2013 – Biddle was very good in the game on the mound, but his future is probably in the outfield at the next level. Batting leadoff he showed good line drive swing with gap-to-gap power and ran the bases well. On the mound he did show a strong arm topping out at 81. He is one of the better unsigned senior left in Indiana.

Pauly Milto, 1B, 2015 – Milto is a big powerful first baseman. He played his position well and at the plate he got the barrel through the zone well showing power potential. He will be a player to follow in the 2015 class.

Tyler Schoettle, IF, 2015 - Like Milto, Schoettle will be one to follow in the 2015 class. He has tall frame and showed good defensive actions at third base with a good arm across the infield. At the plate he had showed quick hands with a level swing producing line drives.

Nick Kuntz, C, 2013 - Kuntz received the ball well behind the plate and had pop times around 2.1. At the plate he showed a some pop and the ability to hit to the opposite field.

Lawrence Central:

Jacob Lane, 1B, 2014 – Lane has a tell frame and looks like a prototypical first baseman. At the plate he showed that there is some good power behind his bat. His swing it is a little long, but he got the barrel through the zone well and showed some power.

Ernie Harshman, OF/LHP, 2015 – Harshman didn’t have his best stuff on the mound, but he showed good velo for this early in the year topping out at 80. At the plate there is some power in his bat and he has quick hands.
