Three Run Fourth Leads LCC over Delphi

By Ben Grossberg

Delphi, IN – Lafayette Central Catholic and Delphi faced off Tuesday afternoon in an exciting one run game. LCC would walk away with a win thanks to solid pitching and timely hitting from the bottom of their lineup. The matchup featured a pair a of Junior pitchers on the mound with RHP Hayes Cronk starting for LCC and LHP Jason Sterrett taking the hill for Delphi.

Both pitchers worked fairly easy through the first two innings, but in the third Delphi’s bats got to Cronk. Sophomore Brett Hawn got the inning started with a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt and a bunt single from Senior Codey Sattler, Delphi had runners on first and third with one out for cleanup hitter sophomore Ostin Clark. Clark drove a ball into the gap for a two run double putting Delphi up 2-0.

In the fourth LCC’s offense got going scoring three runs in the inning. With one out, Andrew Hubertz was hit by a pitch and would move to second on a wild pitch. Senior Jake Churchill singled to left bringing home Hubertz. Sterrett struck out the next batter and looked like he would get out of the inning with the lead intact, however, Junior Gage Ulrey had other ideas by driving a fastball over the left field fence for a two run homerun giving LCC a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth Delphi looked answer when they got a leadoff double from Senior Ricky Windell. Cronk got the next batter out then was replaced by Senior Andrew Hubertz. Hubertz walked the first batter he faced, but then got a strikeout and a pop out to end the inning without and damage.

Hubertz threw the final two innings allowing just one hit and walked one while striking out three to get the win on the mound. In the seventh in a one run game Hubertz set down Delphi 1-2-3 to seal the victory for LCC.

Cronk’s fastball sat mostly 79-81, but touched 82 on several occasions and the lefty Sterrett was 80-82 for most of the game, but reached back a few times touching 84. Sophomore Brett Hawn threw the final two innings for Delphi and his fastball was 80-82 with good arm side run.
