Phil Wade
Indiana Executive Director

Colson Montgomery had the seventh most viewed player profile in Indiana this year. The 2021 SS out of Southridge HS is ranked No. 1 in Indiana and No. 25 in the Prep Baseball Report National Rankings.  An Indiana recruit, Montgomery is one of the top ranked high school draft prospects in the country with tons of athleticism and strong left-handed bat.

Scouting Report

9/13/20: The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Indiana recruit was the top ranked draft prospect at the event (#27 Overall), and continues to ooze projection every time he steps on the field. The frame is wide-shouldered with room to add 20-plus pounds which should assist in more power to come at the plate. The left-handed hitter took big swings throughout the weekend, “just missing” balls that were fouled straight back on multiple occasions with some swing-and-miss present, but found the barrel enough to collect a smattering of hits. From a balanced, slightly hunched over stance, there is intent to work uphill through the zone from the left side with obvious bat speed as he works short-to-long. The weekend look saw Montgomery with more of a pull approach which caused him to pull off the ball at times, but he was a threat to do damage in each plate appearance. While he moves athletically in the field, there is some refinement that will have to come to stick on the left side, although he has adequate arm strength to play third base, and given his limited repetitions, he could make significant advancements in that area of the game moving forward. The big question about Montgomery will be whether he can hit enough to be a corner guy. My gut says that he can, and the already impressive power should quickly increase as he fills out, and with more at-bats, the chance that he makes another jump seems likely given his athleticism.

4/23/19: Spring Scout Blog: No. 1 ranked prospect in Indiana's 2021 class. Long, athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. Shows good control of his body for his size and age. Athletic movements in all facets of his game. Defensively, shows fluid actions with above average glove work; soft hands, clean exchange. Arm action is a little long at times; plenty of arm strength to stay on the left side of the field at the next level. Shows range to both his left and right with athletic footwork. Great feel for the SS position. Offensively the LHH hits from an athletic crouch setup, using a leg kick timing trigger. Load is smooth, quick bat speed through the zone. Divey at times. Went 2-4 with a HR and 2RBI on the night. High level D1 prospect with tons of projectability. Excels in multiple sports: football & basketball.

5/30/18: 6-foot-4 athletic frame with long levers. Instantly see the athleticism. Hits from a wide stance with slight toe drag in his load. Hits on front foot and is divey. Fixable mechanical issues. Projectable pull side power. In night cap hit a home run. Defensively, made a play up the middle look easy. Undecided defensively where he ends up at the next level. The athleticism suggests he is a middle of the field type prospect while the body type suggests he could end up at a corner position. Montgomery is a three sport athlete. He averages 18ppg on the basketball court and is considered widely as a top basketball recruit as well. He also plays football and is the quarterback. Baseball, however, seems to come naturally. It is not a refined, mechanical approach to the game, tons of athletic upside and projection.
