Underclass Trials: Infield Analysis

The Underclass Trials kicks off our summer season and is one of our favorite events because it always brings the most unseen talent to the forefront. Today we roll-out the top infielders from the event. Due to a total of 59 total infielders at the event, we ranked the Top 2018 and 2019 prospects separately.

Lets take a look at the top guys at Underclass Trials.

Top Prospects

2018's

1. D’Eric Shenault, SS, Kenwood, 2018
6-foot, 155-pound, infielder with plenty of room for continued physical development. Shenault continues to prove he is one of the top defensive infielders in the 2018 class. Smooth, athletic actions with plus body control. Flashes supreme confidence in his hands which work soft and out in front of his body. Quick, easy transfer and feet work through the baseball. Loose, athletic arm action, accurate throws with carry and clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. Offensively, barrel control, line-drive approach and spray-type hitter. Balanced setup, early load, short leg-lift timing trigger and good balance through contact. Flashed the ability to backspin the baseball; short, level bat path. Registered a 70 mph exit velocity. Also, ran a 7.09 laser-timed 60.

2. Anthony Herron, 1B, Simeon, 2018
6-foot-2, 235-pound first baseman, hulking build, strong athletic type. Power right-handed bat, tall balanced setup, smooth load, occasionally drifts. Advanced bat speed and bat strength for age, 92 mph exit velocity from the tee. Swing showed easy pop, pull side power, loud contact. 7.34 runner in the 60. Defensively moves well around the bag, average hands, long over the top arm action, 72 mph across the diamond.   

3. Vincent Massaglia, SS/RHP, Morton, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound two-way player, average athletic frame. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, smooth loading action, leg kick trigger. Aggressive swing, attacks the baseball, showed bat speed with hard pull side contact. 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.36 runner in the 60. Showed positive defensive actions on the infield, hands played with the ability to cushion the baseball, athletic defender, plays fluidly for his age. Arm action is loose and quick, some effort, high ¾ slot, flashed carry, 83 mph across the diamond. On the mound arm worked similarly, regular effort, direction and closed toe landing. Fastball sat 80-82 mph, touched 83 mph. Curveball had well above average 12/6 action for his age, 63-66 mph. Knuckleball had occasional flutter, 64-68 mph.

4. Christian Lucio, INF, Mount Carmel, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound, athletically-built infielder. Defensively, natural, athletic infield actions.  Smooth, fluid footwork, good body control and quick, clean transfer. Confident hands, play soft and fields the baseball athletically, out in front of his body. Loose arm from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 82 mph with carry across the diamond. Left-handed hitter, aggressive approach and looseness in swing. Fluid rhythm, pull approach and uphill bat path; 83 mph exit velocity. Open setup, smooth pre-pitch load, short stride and good balance through contact. 7.32 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

5. John Dellostritto, SS, St. Charles East, 2018
5-foot-9, 148-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Ran a 7.04 laser-timed 60. Defensively, impressed on the infield. Above average footwork; smooth, fluid footwork, worked around the baseball and flashed lateral range. Soft hands, athletic fielding position and clean exchange. Also, flashed a strong, accurate arm across the diamond; plenty of arm strength to stick on the left side of the infield, 86 mph. Quick arm from a high ¾ slot.  Offensively, balanced setup, early load, short heel-lift stride and average balance. Pull approach and long, uphill path through the zone. 80 mph exit velocity.

5. Francois Castillo, 3B/OF, Roberto Clemente, 2018
Strong build, 5-foot-11, 205-pound corner defender. Defensively shows big arm strength for his age, 86 mph across the diamond, 89 mph from the outfield, plays from a high ¾ slot, some effort. Defensively profiles at a corner spot in the outfield or infield. Right-handed bat, open setup, reverse toe tap stride. Long path with bat speed, slight uphill plane, lifts the baseball, gap to gap contact. 76 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.37 runner in the 60.

2019's

1. Hayden Brotz, 1B/RHP, Stevenson, 2019
6-foot-1, 205-pound, strong, athletic build, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, excellent balance through the zone, easy juice, strong swing; exit velocity clocked at 89 mph. Present bat speed, advanced gap-to-gap approach, uphill path and fluid rhythm. Balanced setup and short stride. Defensively, athletic fielding position, clean exchanges. High ¾ slot, long arm action; clocked at 72 mph across the diamond. Also, ran an 8.09 laser timed 60. On the mound, showcased the same high ¾ slot as in the field. Tall and fall delivery, long, quick arm action. Fastball, clocked at 76-77, topped 78 mph. Changeup, down in the zone, sat 66-68 mph. Knuckleball, downward tumble, sat 66-68 mph.

2. Coby Moe, RHP/INF, Grayslake Central, 2019
6-foot-3, 160-pound lanky, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, balanced setup, short, leg kick trigger, and maintains balance through the hitting zone. Present bat speed, short, level path, extension after contact, gap-to-gap approach, fluid rhythm, looseness in swing, consistent hard contact; exit velocity recorded at 83 mph. Defensively, athletic actions, quick and clean exchanges. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot, quick release; throws registered at 69 mph across the diamond. Ran an 8.18 laser timed 60. On the mound, Moe shows a high ceiling. Tall and fall delivery, maintains rhythm and tempo throughout, and stays in line with the target. High ¾ slot, quick, short arm. Fastball sat at 77-79, topping at 82 mph. Curveball, 11/5 break, sat 64-67 mph. Changeup ranged between 66-69 mph.

3. Kyle Wisch, RHP/INF, Hinsdale Central, 2019
Currently ranked No. 5 in the 2019 class. 6-foot-3, 190-pound, physically advanced, strong, two-way prospect. Right-handed pitcher with big upside on the mound. Showed feel for a four pitch mix; slider and curveball have two distinct shapes and velocities. Tall and fall, controlled, repeatable delivery; lands closed and falls off towards first base at times. Arm works quick and loose out of a high ¾ window. Fastball, thrown for strikes, flashed life and boaring action when located down in the zone, sat 82-83 mph. Curveball, feel, works mostly 12/6, good spin and depth; 66-68 mph. Slider, tight, sharp 10/4 action, 69-71 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, arm-side-run and clocked at 72-73 mph. Offensively, hits from the right side. Flashed bat speed, lift in swing, pull approach; 80 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, slight load and short stride. Defensively, profiles as a third baseman. Steady hands and a clean transfer on the infield. Long, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot, throws were accurate across the diamond and clocked at 79 mph. Also, ran an 8.06 60. High level 2019 prospect on the mound.

Logan Anderson, 3B/C/RHP, Providence Catholic, 2018
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed utility player with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup. Short arm bar load with a short stride and good balance. Pull power hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.14. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 77 mph. Solid footwork with soft hands. Behind the plate has a short arm action. Accurate throws with carry. Popped 2.26-2.37 and threw 74 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Works in line with home plate. Fastball was straight at 76-77 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with loose rotation at 59-62 mph. Maintained fastball arm speed on changeup that showed cutting action at 66-69 mph.

Evan Bogenschneider, INF, Hanover Central, 2018
5-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Ran a 7.21 laser-timed 60. Defensively, flashed athleticism and body control on a play to his backhand. Soft hands, clean transfer, fields the baseball athletically and out in front of his body. Arm works out of a ¾ slot and clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. Offensively, balanced, slightly open setup, short stride and maintains balance through contact. Uphill bat path and a 73 mph exit velocity off of a tee.

Jake Busse, LHP/INF, Woodstock North, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound, lanky, two-way prospect. On the mound, the left-hander flashed a short, loose arm action out of a high ¾ slot. Delivery works with some rhythm and repeatability. Fastball, clocked at 74-76 mph. Curveball, sweeping action, sat 65-68 mph. Changeup, gets underneath at times, straight action, 69-71 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced, slightly open setup, no load and average stride. Uphill bat path and pull-side tendencies; 74 mph exit velocity. Defensively, reliable hands on the infield. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, and clocked at 71 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.26 laser-timed 60.

Zachary Carmignani, INF, Nazareth, 2019
5-foot-9, 170 pound, infielder, strong lower half. Offensively, right handed hitter, long, uphill path, with a gap-gap approach. Balanced setup, short stride; exit velocity clocked at 73 mph. Defensively, clean exchange, long, accurate arm from a high ¾ arm slot; 75 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.50 laser-timed 60.

Mason Crews, C/3B, Manteno, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting C/3B with an athletic frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, short hand load with a heel lift stride. Gap to gap hitter with a long, uphill swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.76. Defensively took drills behind the plate and in the infield. Behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Quick footwork and transfer. Blocked well in bullpens Popped 2.04-2.11 and threw 75 mph from the crouch. In the infield showed soft hands with good body control. Threw 80 mph across the infield with carry.

Drew Davis, SS, Illini Bluffs, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Defensively, plays with quick feet, lateral range and a bounce in his step. Soft hands, athletic fielding position and a clean transfer. Throws from a high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. Offensively, simple approach and not a lot of wasted movement. Balanced, crouched setup, short stride and average balance throughout. Level bat path, flashed the ability to backspin the baseball, line-drive approach; 71 mph exit velocity. 7.61 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

Johnny Deconcilis, INF, Lake Park, 2019
5-foot-7, 140-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, balanced, wide setup, short stride and average balance through contact. Uphill bat path; registered a 64 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, flashed quick feet and soft hands on the infield. Short arm action, high ¾ to ¾ slot and throws clocked at 67 mph across the diamond. Also, 7.64 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

Jake Devine, RHP/1B, Mundelein, 2019
6-foot, 165 pound, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, with a long path through the zone. Open setup, short stride; exit velocity clocked at 70. Defensively, plays through the baseball. Long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot; 65 mph across the infield. 8.61 runner in the laser-timed 60. On the mound, right handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, flashed rhythm, stays in line. Long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball, mostly straight, sat 73-74 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 65-68 mph. Changeup, sat 68-71 mph.

Justin Divelbiss, RHP/INF, Plainfield Central, 2019
5-foot-10, 135-pound, lean, athletically built two-way prospect. On the mound, the right-hander features a clean, loose and quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, regular effort, stays in-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Fastball works straight, thrown for strikes and clocked at 77-78 mph, touching 79.  Curveball, 11/5 shape, some depth, 64-66 mph. Changeup, down at times, 64-66 mph. Knuckleball ranged between 58-60 mph. Offensively, hits from the right side. Flashed bat speed, gap-to-gap approach and fluid rhythm throughout. Open setup, smooth load, long stride and maintains balance through contact. 78 mph exit velocity. Defensively, flashed range to his backhand side. Fields out front with a clean exchange at times. Low ¾ slot and clocked at 73 mph. 7.52 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

Jared Dorfman, INF, Mundelein, 2019
5-foot-8, 130-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Ran a 7.54 laser-timed 60. Offensively, balanced setup, no load and short stride. Uphill bat path at times with a pull approach. 72 mph exit velocity. Defensively, fields low to the ground, throws from a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot on the infield and clocked at 68 mph.

Jacob Duncan, RHP/INF, Cary-Grove, 2019
5-foot-11, 180-pound, strong bodied, two-way prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, narrow, slightly open stance, short, double toe tap stride. Uphill bat path and flashed pop; recorded an 83 mph exit velocity off of a tee. Defensively, fluid footwork, quick exchanges, athletic fielding position. High 3/4, long arm action, accurate throws with carry across the diamond, flashed arm strength; registered throws at 77 mph in the infield. Also, ran a 7.53 laser timed 60. On the mound, high ¾ slot, quick arm, long, loose arm action, some effort. Tall and fall delivery, lands closed. Fastball, sat 78-79, topped 82 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, pounded the bottom of the zone, ranged 67-71 mph. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, arm side run, ranged 68-70 mph. 2019 arm to follow.

Trevor Fulmer, RHP/INF, Addison, 2018
6-foot-2, 220-pound, strong, extra-large, two-way prospect. On the mound, tall and fall delivery, some rhythm, regular effort and finishes towards first base. Arm works long and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball, flashed heaviness when down in the zone and clocked at 78-81 mph. Curveball, thrown for strikes, 12/6 shape, some depth, 65-69 mph. Changeup, straight action, 72-73 mph. Offensively, flashed pull power and bat speed; 84 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, short stride and uphill bat path. Defensively, moves around the bag fluidly, short arm action, from an over-the-top slot. Throws clocked at 73 mph across the diamond. 7.74 runner in the 60.

Jack Grace, INF, Fenwick, 2018
6-foot-2, 190-pound, athletically built, right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, flashed bat speed, looseness in swing, uphill bat path and a gap-to-gap approach; 84 mph exit velocity off of a tee. Tall, narrow setup, leg-kick timing trigger and average balance through contact. Defensively, moves fluidly around the bag at first base. Short arm action, accurate throws, clocked at 71 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.40 laser-timed 60.

Corey Graham, OF/INF/RHP, Crete Monee, 2018
6-foot, 155-pound multi-positional player, average athletic shape. Right-handed hitter, tall setup with balanced feet, arm bar load, short stride. Athletic hands, loose swing. 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively worked at multiple positions, arm played with length and loose, 82 mph from the outfield, 71 mph across the diamond. Above average runner for his age, 7.04 in the 60. Showed an ability to play through the baseball athletically and in stride. On the mound, fastball sat 68-72 mph. Curveball played on 11/5 plane, 55-63 mph. Changeup flashed sink, slows arm at times, ranged 54-62 mph.

Peter Gross, INF, Antioch, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound, well-proportioned, right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, open, balanced setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Uphill bat path and pull approach at the plate; 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, arm works long and out of a ¾ slot. Throws clocked at 65 mph across the diamond. Also, 8.18 runner in the 60.

Ryan Guenther, 1B/RHP, Washington Community, 2019
6-foot, 168-pound, lean, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, tall, open set up, leg-kick timing mechanism. Level bat path, pull side approach, some strength in swing; exit velocity recorded at 77 mph. Defensively, long arm action with effort, accurate throws across the diamond; clocked at 71 mph in the infield. Also, ran an 8.25 laser timed 60. On the mound, high ¾ slot, short arm action. Drop and drive delivery, stays in line with target. Fastball, sat 73-74 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, ranged between 60-63 mph. Changeup, arm side run, clocked at 65-67 mph.

Kaden Hubly, C/2B, Herscher, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a narrow, balanced setup, slight bar on load with a short leg lift stride. Long, level swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.17. Defensively took drills behind the plate and in the infield. Behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Popped 2.18-2.29 and threw 66 mph from the crouch. Threw 68 mph across the infield.

Hunter Johnson, INF, St. Viator, 2018
6-foot-1, 170-pound, lanky, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, long and level bat path. Balanced, open setup, long leg-lift timing trigger and average balance throughout. 78 mph exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action from a ¾ slot on the infield. Throws clocked at 73 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.90 laser-timed 60.

Max Jovanovic, INF, Taft, 2019
5-foot-6, 140-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, flashed pre-pitch rhythm. Open setup, long stride and average balance through contact. Uphill bat path and pull-side approach; 68 mph exit velocity. Defensively, on the infield throws from a ¾ slot and clocked at 68 mph across the diamond. Also, 8.00 runner in the 60.

Jake Kapers, C/2B, Mount Carmel, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting C/2B. Offensively hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a short stride and good balance. Gap to gap hitter with a short, level swing path and fluid rhythm. Back spinned balls in batting practice. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.42. Defensively took drills behind the plate and in the infield. Short arm action from an over the top slot. Quick exchange behind the plate. Popped 2.09-2.19 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. Soft hands in the infield with fluid footwork and athletic actions. Threw 82 mph across the infield.

Mason Kasprisin, RHP/INF, Joliet West, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound, athletically framed, lanky, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, balanced stance, back-side load, short stride, leg-lift timing trigger, balance through contact. Present bat speed, looseness, pull-side, line-drive approach; exit velocity recorded at 85 mph off of a tee. Defensively, clean exchanges on throws across the diamond. ¾ arm slot, long arm action; clocked at 73 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.82 laser timed 60. On the mound, fastball sat 75-77, topped at 78 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, ranged between 63 -66 mph. Changeup, clocked between 65-69 mph.

Austin Lane, INF/RHP, Leroy, 2018
5-foot-9, 185-pound, strong, two-way prospect. On the mound, drop and drive delivery, coiled load and some effort throughout. Arm works loose and out of a high ¾ window. Flashed some arm strength for his age; fastball, mainly straight, thrown for strikes and clocked at 82-85 mph. Curveball, feel and depth, 11/5 shape and clocked at 69-71 mph. Changeup, mostly straight, 76-78 mph. Offensively, balanced, open setup position, long stride and flashed quick hands at times; 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action out of a ¾ slot on the infield. Throws clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.56 laser-timed 60.

Jac Lindish, INF/RHP, Plainfield Central, 2019
5-foot-8, 165 pound, two-way prospect. Ran a 7.36 laser-timed 60. Offensively, right handed hitter with a pull approach. Balanced setup, short toe-tap stride and a long, uphill path; exit velocity clocked at 79 mph. Defensively, flashed quick feet, ranged well to his left and right on the infield. Short arm action from a high ¾ to ¾ arm slot. On the mound, drop and dive, up-tempo delivery, slightly closed landing. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, flashed run, sat 65-66 mph. Curveball, 59-61 mph. Changeup, slight arm side run, 61-62 mph.

Kooper Loehr, INF, Mount Zion, 2019
5-foot-7, 120-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Defensively, feel for the middle infield, flashed soft hands, fluid footwork and a quick, clean exchange. Throws from a high ¾ slot, accurate and clocked at 72 mph across the diamond. Offensively, line-drive approach at the plate. Balanced setup, slight backside load and short stride. Registered a 72 mph exit velocity. Also, ran a 7.80 laser-timed 60.

Eric Lundell, RHP/INF, Marmion, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound lanky, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, slightly open, balanced stance, smooth back side load, short, toe tap stride. Long bat path, looseness in swing, gap-to-gap approach, fluid rhythm; exit velocity clocked at 77 mph. Defensively, low ¾ slot, loose arm action; clocked at 69 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.73 laser timed 60. On the mound, high ¾ slot, quick arm speed, long and loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery, lands slightly closed. Fastball, some life, ranged between 77-79 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, fastball arm speed, clocked between 67-69 mph. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, slight cut, sat 68-71 mph. Slider, ranged between 68-70 mph.

Colin Mack, INF/OF, Morgan Township (IN), 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound infielder/outfielder, lean athletic frame. Ran a 7.12 laser-timed 60. Right-handed hitter, closed stance, short stride. Simple approach, showed good hands, short path. 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played at 80 mph from the outfield and 79 mph across the infield, short high ¾ arm action. Average hands, plays through the baseball.

Brandon Mahoney, INF, Brother Rice, 2018
6-foot-3, 210-pound, strong, extra-large, right-handed hitting first baseman. Offensively, flashed bat speed, pull pop and hard contact; 83 mph exit velocity. Fluid rhythm, balanced setup, smooth load, short stride and uphill bat path. Defensively, flashed soft hands on the infield. Short arm action out of an over-the-top slot and throws clocked at 70 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 8.15 laser-timed 60.

Chase Maifield, INF/LHP, Grant, 2018
6-foot-4, 230-pound, extra-large, hulking two-way prospect. Offensively, left-handed hitter with power potential. Fluid rhythm, gap-to-gap approach and flashed bat speed. Looseness in swing and level path through the hitting zone; 80 mph exit velocity. Open setup, smooth load, stride gets back to even and maintains balance through contact. Defensively, short arm action, ¾ slot, 68 mph across the diamond. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, throws three pitches for a strike. Tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, stays in line, lands square with regular effort throughout.  Short arm action from an over-the-top slot. Fastball, thrown for strikes, tilt, downhill, heavy action, clocked at 74-77 mph, touched 78. Curveball, flashed feel at times, 12/6 shape and ranged between 63-66 mph. Changeup, stays on top, thrown for strikes, down in the zone, straight action, sat 69-74 mph.

Freddie March, C/1B, Lake Park, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a lanky frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a low hand set. Long, leg kick stride with looseness in the hands. Gap to gap line drive hitter with fluid rhythm. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.05. Defensively took drills behind the plate and in the infield. Behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Accurate throws with slower footwork. Popped 2.36-2.43 and threw 67 mph from the crouch. At first base showed average hands throwing 67 mph across the infield.

Simon Marinelli, C/2B, Addison Trail, 2018
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting C/2B. Defensively took drills behind the plate and in the infield. Behind the plate has a short, loose arm action. Gains ground towards second base on throws, quick releases. Showed flexibility in the lower half receiving. Popped 2.07-2.18 and threw 72 mph from the crouch. Threw 72 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a wide base with a balanced setup, short stride with good balance. Line drive hitter with a long swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32.

Luke Markunas, INF/RHP, Washington Community, 2019
6-foot-3, 200-pound, big bodied, two-way prospect. Offensively, right handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride. Long, uphill bat path, pull side approach; exit velocity clocked at 84 mph.
