2025 KSHSAA Team Preview: Onaga Buffaloes

Prep Baseball Kansas Staff

The Kansas high school baseball season kicks off on Mar. 20, opening day for regular season action under KSHSAA regulations. Leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2025 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, counting down to the official Prep Baseball Kansas Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Perennially, we’ve submitted a preseason questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2025 preseason coverage continues today.

2025 SEASON OUTLOOK

No. of Returning Position Players: 8
No. of Returning Pitchers: 3

Top Returners:

  • P/SS Jackson Kolterman (2025; Butler CC) - 6'0", 175lbs, R/R
    • 1st Team All-State as a junior
    • 2nd Team All-State as a sophomore
    • 1st Team All-League as a freshman, sophomore, junior
    • As a junior, broke the school record single season record for batting average, OPS, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, triples, homeruns, total bases, and did it all in 17 total games played. He also holds the single-season school record for runs scored from his sophomore year.
    • Has already broken the career record for home runs at Onaga (13) and should break several more this season.
    • Finished top five in the state in batting average (.635), home runs (8), slugging (1.327), on-base percentage (.710).
    • Finished top ten in the state in RBI (37), stolen bases (27)
    • 7-3 on the mound, 2.15 ERA, two complete game shutouts, one no-hitter. 46 strikeouts, 13 walks in 39 innings pitched.
    • Defensively, he is one of the best shortstops in 2-1A baseball.
    • The leader of our team, he got votes last year for 2-1A Player of the Year in Kansas, and I think he'll be in the running again for that.
  • P/UTL L.J. Koelzer (2025) - 6'0", 195lbs, R/R
    • 2nd Team All-League as a junior
    • Hit .323, OPS of .882, 1 home run, 24 RBI, 25 runs scored as a junior
    • 1-0 on the mound as one of our two top relievers. He'll be in that role again for us and should pitch more than the 15.1 he did in 2024.
  • P/C/1B Casen Hutfles (2027) - 6'3", 185lbs, R/R
    • Hit .292, OPS of .790, 17 RBI, 11 runs scored as a freshman
    • Pitched the fifth most innings for us. Had a great summer throwing and should be our game #2 starter this season.
    • Can play multiple positions, and with his freshman season in behind him, he's going to be a leader for us for the next few years.
  • DH Xavier Berges (2027) - 6'0", 150lbs, R/R
    • 3rd Team All-State as a freshman
    • 2nd Team All-League as a freshman
    • Hit .405, OPS of .992, 19 runs scored as a freshman
    • Only struck out three times all season, two of which came against a 1st Team All-State pitcher (Zac Evans, Valley Falls) at the end of the season.

Top Newcomers:

  • CF Maddex Honas (2027) - 5'6", 125lbs, R/R
    • Played some center field for us last year. Quick, speedy kid who helped us a pinch runner and was great in center field. Needs to improve at the plate
  • P/3B Josh Daniels - 5'10", 190lbs, R/R
    • Did not play last year. Also on our state golf team, so may be a position-only player. But he's a great athlete who has played a lot of baseball. Good arm, should be able to eat up innings for us on the mound, and did well this summer filling the third base role that Rayce Fisher did last year as a 2nd Team All-State third baseman.

Key Players Lost:

  • P/C/CF Hunter Lamond
  • 3B Rayce Fisher

Coach’s Insight: “Our experience will be a strength of ours this year. After finishing 4th in the state two years ago, we lost four multi-year starters and went through some growing pains in 2024. Most of those kids are back and have more confidence and experience under their belt. Replacing Hunter Lamond (3rd Team All-State center fielder, and one of our two best pitchers) and Rayce Fisher (2nd Team All-State third baseman) will not be easy. But we have a lot of returning pieces and a couple of newcomers that should fill in some of those gaps. We won't have have the firepower that we had two years ago, but we will be really good defensively and we have a lot of athletic kids that are going to be able to run the bases and put pressure on defenses. Filling in pitching from last season will be our biggest challenge. Hunter Lamond was a really good starting pitcher, and ate up a lot of innings for us. He was also a phenomenal center fielder, and hit third in the batting order. He was 3rd Team All-State last season, was a four-year starter, and he hit .407 with 5 home runs his senior season. Rayce Fisher was a three year starter for us, was great defensively, and brought a lot of power to our cleanup spot in the order. He was 2nd Team All-State as a third baseman his senior year. We don't have a lot of guys to replace, but the ones we do have to left some big shoes to fill. Production at the top of our lineup and the hole left by Lamond on the mound will be our biggest challenges.” – Adam Kufahl, head coach
