Bi-State Winter Open ID: Corner Infield Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Bi-State Winter Open ID Showcase on Saturday, February 20 at Prodigy Baseball Academy in Parkville, Missouri.  The event featured over 50 players from the Missouri and Kansas area in the 2016 to 2019 classes.

Player's profiles have been updated with times, velos, videos and profile pictures. We will take a look at each position, looking at the corner infielders today.  Although some corner infielders worked out in other positions, this is just a look at the performances as a corner infielder. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Corner Infielders

Massimo Avelluto, 3B, Rockhurst (MO), 2018
Avelluto is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouir’s 2018 class from Rockhurst.  He ran a 4.59 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 77 mph.  At the plate, he has a gap-to-gap approach, starts from a balanced position, open stance and minimal load, level swing plane.  On the infield, over the top release point, fluid footwork with clean exchange, loose arm action, 70 mph positional velo.

Brayden Becker, 3B, Prairie Hills (KS), 2018
Becker is a 5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class from Sabetha, KS.  He ran a 4.35 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 77 mph.  At the plate, physical htter, balanced set up, no stride, smooth load, swing produces line drives to middle of cage.  On the infield, high three quarters release, 72 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, fields ball in athletic position, fluid actions.

Alex Buffo, 1B, Blue Valley West (KS), 2017
Buffo is a 6-foot 220-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class from Blue Valley West HS.  He ran a 4.34 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 87 mph, one of the top RHH exit velos at the event.  At the plate, balanced set up, short in line stride, aggressive, middle to pull side approach, strong hands. On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, footwork creates momentum towards second, clean exchange.

Robert Bundy, 3B, Andover (KS), 2017
Bundy is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class from Andover HS.  He ran a 4.44 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 87 mph. At the plate, open stance, short in-line stride, loose hands, gap-to-gap approach, repeats swing.  On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean transfer with fluid footwork, fields ball in athletic position.

Jake Burkhart, 1B, Buhler (KS), 2017
Burkhart is a 5-foot-11 218-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class from Buhler HS.  He ran a 4.66 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 84 mph.  At the plate, starts loaded in back leg, smooth rhythm, middle to pull line drives.  On the infield, 72 mph positional velo at 1B, high three quarters release, quick transfer and release, fluid footwork. 

Mark Duley, 1B, Riverton (KS), 2017
Duley is a 6-foot-5 215-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class from Riverton HS.  He ran a 4.34 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 96 mph, top RHH exit velo at the event.  At the plate, athletic stance, short stride with no wasted movement in load, quick and level bat speed, aggressive/strong hands, power to pull side with gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo at 1B, athletic actions, fluid glove to hand transfer with athletic footwork, over the top release, arm works, momentum through towards second to throw.

Alec Koehn, 3B, Dodge City (KS), 2016
Koehn is a 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2016 class from Dodge City HS.  He ran a 4.95 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 70 mph.  At the plate, athletic set up, short stride, no wasted movement, gap-to-gap approach, balanced finish.  On the infield, high three quarters release, 79 mph positional velo, arm works, footwork creates momentum to throw, fluid transfers.

Cal Melcher, 3B, St. Pius (MO), 2017
Melcher is a 5-foot-11 191-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2017 class from St. Pius HS.  He ran a 4.31 home-to-first and has an 87 mph exit velo, one of the top  RHH exit velo at the event. At the plate, balanced stance, controlled leg kick loading with hands, quick hands with quick bat speed, swing produces line drives to middle of cage during batting practice.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, over the top release, hands work in sync with feet, clean exchange, plays through the ball.

Grant Mertz, 1B, Park Hill (MO), 2018
Mertz is a 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class from Park Hill HS.  He ran a 4.88 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 83 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth load into back leg, loose hands with level path, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, high three quarters release, long arm circle, fluid footwork working with transfer in hands, 74 mph positional velo.

Landen Turner, 1B, Staley (MO), 2017
Turner is a 5-foot-11 200 left-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2017 class from Staley HS.  He ran a 4.60 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 85 mph, one of top LHH exit velo at the event. At the plate, starts with a controlled leg lift and linear weight shit into back side, in-line stride, showed power to pull side, middle to pull approach.  On the infield, 72 mph positional velo at 1B, high three quarters release, fluid footwork with clean exchange. 

Garrett Welschmeyer, 3B, Blair Oaks (MO), 2017
Welshchmeyer is a 5-foot-10 205-pound right-handed hitting thirdbaseman in Missouri’s 2017 class from Blair Oaks HS.  He ran a 4.59 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 84 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, short stride, efficient movements in load, level path to extension, drove balls consistently gap-to-gap during batting practice.  On the infield, 73 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean transfer, fluid footwork creating momentum to throw.
