Class of 2019 Games: Pitchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report - Kansas/Missouri held the Class of 2019 Games at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas on June 26.  Nearly 40 players in the 2019 class from Missouri and Kansas attended.

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard. Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the catcher from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Here is a break down of the pitchers from the Kansas Underclass Games.

Pitchers

Hayden Bontrager RHP / 3B / Maize South, KS / 2019

Bontrager has a large, athletic and projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 165 pounds. He has a compact delivery, smooth and fluid actions, works with direction towards home plate, long and loose arm action, throws three quality pitches for strikes, high ¾ arm slot. Bontrager’s fastball range is 79-81 mph, arm side run, strikes to both sides of the plate. Changeup is 69-73 mph, arm side run and sink, high number of strikes. Curveball is 66-70 mph, has a change to be a plus pitch, 10-to-4 shape, late bite at times. During game action Bontrager forced a lot of weak contact and curveball was a swing and miss pitch.

Hunter Cashero RHP / SS / St. James Academy, KS / 2019

Cashero is a 6-foot, 175-pound right-handed pitcher and middle infielder in Kansas’ 2019 class from St. James HS. He ran a 7.18 60, 4.56 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 91 mph, one of the tops at the event. During batting practice Cashero, starts balanced, uses a toe tap to load, strides slightly open, showed solid contact and line drives to the middle of the field and pop to his pull side. Defensively, he had clean transfers, attacked the baseball, ¾ arm slot, accurate throws and a positional velo of 81 mph. On the mound, Cashero has a smooth delivery, accelerates down the mound, repeats, clean arm action, throws 3 quality pitches for strikes, fastball was strikes to both sides of the plate, 79-83 mph, some arm side run, curveball is 64-67, 11-to-5 shape, late bite, changeup is 69-71 with arm side run and sink.

Owen Chaffin RHP / 2B / Blue Valley Southwest HS, KS / 2019

Chaffin has long limbs and a slender, projectable build at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. He ran a 7.34 60, 4.40 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. During batting practice, Chaffin uses an crouched, balanced set up, leg kick, long stride, explosive lower half, ball jumps off barrel with line drives to the middle and pull side of the field. Defensively, Chaffin projects as a corner infielder with long arm action, fluid footwork, good range, strong arm with a positional velo of 81 mph, accurate throws. On the mound, Chaffin has a fluid delivery, high leg kick, works downhill, high ¾ arm slot, fastball is 82-84 mph with occasional run, locates to both sides of the plate, change up is 72-76 with run, curveball was thrown from strikes, 65-68 mph, 11-to-5 shape, gradual bite. Chaffin does mix in a slider, similar velo to curveball, drops arm slot, 10-to-4 shape, late bite.

Castor Dodd 1B / OF / Brookfield, MO / 2019

Dodd has an athletic, strong build at 6-foot-1, 205-pounds. He ran a 4.48 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. During batting practice, Dodd shows a smooth load with a toe tap, quiet hands, in line stride, contact to all fields, good bat whip, stays balanced throughout his swing. Defensively at first base, Dodd has fluid footwork, long and clean arm action, positional velo of 83 mph, fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Dodd has a fluid delivery, works downhill, quick arm, high ¾ arm slot, fields his position, locates fastball to both sides of the plate with arm side run, high percentage of strikes, 80-86 mph, curveball has 11-to-5 shape, sharp bite at times, near fastball arm speed, 67-69 mph.

Deriq Doty C / RHP / Maize , KS / 2019

Doty has an athletic build and large frame at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. He ran a 4.48 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. During batting practice, Doty has a balanced set up, quiet load, quick hands, minimal head movement, showed contact to center and left field with some pop. Defensively, Doty has quick, fluid footwork, clean transfers, high ¾ release, positional velo of 73 mph, mostly accurate throws and pop times between 1.93 and 2.10 seconds. On the mound, Doty has a fluid and repeatable delivery, rhythm with hands, deceptive arm action from a high ¾ slot, fastball is heavy with some arm side run, strikes to both sides of the plate, 77-80 mph, curveball is 60-65 mph, sharp bite at times, 10-to-4 shape, throws it for strikes.

Hunter Edwards RHP / OF / Blue Valley, KS / 2019

Edwards has an athletic build and large frame at 6-foot-4, 192 pounds. Edwards has a repeatable delivery, quick tempo, short and quick arm action, max effort, over the top arm slot, downhill. Delivery is deceptive with the use of glove side and arm action behind body. Fastball is 80-82 mph, thrown for strikes, uses 2 seam for arm side run. Changeup is 67-68 mph, near fastball arm speed. Curveball has 12-to-6 shape, gradual downward action, 63-65 mph.

Grant Heizer RHP / OF / Lee's Summit , MO / 2019

Heizer has an athletic build at 5-foot-9, 155 pounds. He has a smooth and repeatable delivery, gains momentum down the mound, consistent tempo, leverages up his front side, high ¾ arm slot. Fastball is thrown for strikes, he will cut it when thrown to glove side and will run it to arm side, 80-83 mph, induced ground balls in game action. Curveball is 71-74 mph, 11-to-5 shape, sharp and late bite at times, fastball arm speed, potential to be a swing and miss pitch.

Korbin Hiebert OF / LHP / Eudora, KS / 2019

Hiebert has a slender and athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. He ran a 7.20 60, 4.28 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 80. During batting practice, Hiebert showed an simple load, shorter stride, loose hands, easy swing, line drive contact, gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, he has easy arm action, high ¾ release, positional velo of 75 mph, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Hiebert throws from an over the top arm slot, easy arm action, smooth delivery, gains momentum down the mound, fastball is 71-76 mph, throws a 2-seam with arm side run, high percentage of strikes, changeup shows some depth, near fastball armspeed, 63-64 mph, high percentage of strikes, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, thrown for strikes, 62-63 mph.

Dakota Jackson RHP / OF / Gardner Edgerton , KS / 2019

Jackson is a 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder in Kansas’ 2019 class from Gardner Edgerton HS. He ran a 4.50 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 86 mph. During batting practice, Jackson starts with a slightly open stance, leg lift, uses his long limbs to leverage his body, showed some pop to left field and had a single during game action. During infield evaluations, he showed range to his glove side, clean transfers, long arm, high ¾ arm slot, positional velo of 72 mph and accurate throws. On the mound, Jackson’s large frame make him a projectable prospect, delivery is compact, works downhill, gains momentum down the mound, high ¾ arm slot, clean arm action, kept hitters off balance during game action, fastball has arm side run, high percentage of strikes, 73-76 mph, curveball has 11-to-5 shape, 59-61 mph, late bite at times, changeup is 67-68 mph, good feel, fastball arm speed, strikes at bottom of the zone.

Jordan Jackson RHP / 3B / Washburn Rural, KS / 2019

Jackson has a solid frame at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds. He ran 4.37 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 80 mph. During batting practice, Jackson starts with a more narrow and open stance, toe tap into his load, quick hands, open stride. Defensively, Jackson showed a good glove, clean transfers, range to his glove side and back hand, positional velo of 79 mph, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Jackson works downhill, gets good drive from his backside, over the top arm slot, fastball is 80-84 mph, thrown for strikes, curveball is 67-71 mph, 12-to-6 shape, showed late bite at times, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, changeup is 63-66 mph.

Brett Kennett SS / OF / Olathe South , KS / 2019

Kennett has large frame and athletic build at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds. He ran a 7.15 60, 4.42 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 85 mph. During batting practice, Kennett starts in a wider but athletic stance, minimal load, quick hands, flat barrel path, hard contact to all fields. In the outfield, he works behind the baseball, long and clean arm action, ball has some carry, positional velo of 86 mph, accurate throws. On the infield, Kennett has good actions, quick arm, momentum towards first base, positional velo of 78 mph, accurate throws. On the mound, Kennett has a fluid and repeatable delivery, quick and loose arm action, works downhill, high ¾ arm slot, fastball is 79-82 mph, high percentage of strikes, cut action, changeup is 71-73 mph, occasional cut, curveball is 70-71, sharp bite at times, 11-to-5 shape, used primarily as an out pitch in game action.

Ethan Keopke RHP / OF / Mill Valley , KS / 2019

Keopke has a big bodied and strong frame at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds. Keopke has an athletic and repeatable delivery, over the top arm slot, long and clean arm action, shows body control, good drive from a strong lower half, directional towards home plate. Fastball sits 83-85 and tops at 87, thrown for strikes, will use a 2 seam for some arm side run. Curveball is 69-73, late bite at times, 11-to-5 shape. Changeup is 76 mph, occasional arm side run when located at the knees.

Brooks Shuler 3B / RHP / Washburn Rural, KS / 2019

Shuler is a strong bodied 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder in Kansas’ 2019 class out of Topeka’s Washburn Rural HS. He ran a 4.65 home-to-first and posted and exit velocity of 82 mph. During batting practice, Shuler starts with an open stance, toe taps into his load, loose hands, remains balanced throughout his swing, showed above average pop to left field, during game action hit a single to left field. Defensively, he attacks the baseball, clean transfers, ¾ arm slot, positional velo of 71 mph, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Shuler’s delivery is directional, uses a hand tap to trigger his hands, gains momentum down the mound, fastball is 68-71mph, thrown for strikes, uses a 2 seam for arm side run, curveball has 11-to-5 shape at 57-60 mph, gradual bite, changeup is 57-60 mph.

Leo Stone LHP / LHP / Shawnee Mission East, KS / 2019

Stone is a 5-foot-7, 155-pound left-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class out of Shawnee Mission East HS. Stone has a simple delivery, rhythm with hands, deceptive with glove side and arm action behind body, high ¾ release, long and clean arm action, gains momentum down the mound. Fastball is consistently 74-76 mph, arm side run, thrown to both sides of the plate, changeup shows depth at times, 67-68 mph, near fastball arm speed. Curveball has 1-to-7 shape, gradual action, 61-63 mph.
