Fall Underclass Games: Pitchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Fall Underclass Games at the University of Kansas on Saturday, October 20.  Over 50 players in the 2021-2022 classes from around the region attended.

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the pitchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Pitchers

Jericho Badwan LHP / OF / Fort Zumwalt West , MO / 2021

Badwan is a lean and athletic left-handed pitching and outfield prospect in Missouri’s 2021 class out of Ft. Zumwalt West HS. On the mound, Badwan has a simple and compact delivery, repeats, works downhill, uses glove side for added deception, high three-quarter arm slot, quick arm.  Fastball is 73-78 mph, thrown for a high percentage of strikes to both sides of the plate, occasional cut, kept hitters off balance during game action, curveball was 61-62 mph at the event, 1-to-7 shape, sharp at times, changeup is 68-69 mph with some cut.

Nyle Banks SS / RHP / Olathe North , KS / 2021

Banks is a 5-foot-9, 145-pound lean bodied and athletic switch hitting middle infielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2021 recruiting class. On the mound, Banks shows his athleticism, loose quick arm action, downhill tilt, high glove side for added deception, arms and legs coming at the hitter, fastball is 81-85 mph, late action, gets on hitter quick, curveball is 68-71 mph at the event, sharp, late downward action, changeup is 76 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Lance Bolles RHP / 2B / Kearney , MO / 2021

Bolles is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed pitching prospect in Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class out of Kearney, MO. Bolles has a simple and repeatable delivery, across the body with stride, accelerates down the mound, works downhill, hides the ball with a high glove side action, quick arm action, works from an over the top arm slot. Fastball is 75-78 mph, produces late cut action, thrown for a good amount of strikes. Curveball is 62-64 mph, 12-to-6 shape with late and sharp bite at times, thrown for a high percentage of strikes. Changeup has a chance to be a plus pitch, tough for hitters to pick up as it is thrown with fastball arm speed, arm side run, 69-73 mph.

Ryan Carolan C / RHP / St. John Vianney, MO / 2021

Carolan is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. On the mound, Carolan has long levers, projectable frame, loose clean arm action, simple delivery, repeats, across the body with stride, high three-quarter arm slot. Fastball is 71-75 mph, arm side run, thrown for strikes, located to both sides of the plate, induced ground balls in game action. Curveball is 59-61 mph, sharp at times, near fastball arm speed, 11-to-5 shape, changeup is 68-69 mph with fading action.

Riley Clancy OF / LHP / Vianney, MO / 2021

Clancy has a large frame and athletic build at 6-foot, 180-pounds and is a left-handed hitting outfielder and LHP in Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class. On the mound, Clancy throws with regular effort, simple compact delivery, downhill tilt, accelerates down the mound, three-quarter release. Fastball is 65-72 mph, occasional run, thrown for strikes, curveball is 54 -59 mph (at the event), thrown for a high percentage of strikes, 10-to-4 shape, gradual action, changeup is 59-60 mph, fading action.

Joshua Darrenkamp OF / LHP / Maize South , KS / 2022

Darrenkamp is a 5-foot-6, 130-pound left-handed pitching and outfield prospect in Kansas’ 2022 class. On the mound, Darrenkamp shows an athletic, smooth, controlled and repeatable delivery, easy arm action from a three-quarter release. Fastball has arm side run, thrown for a good amount of strikes, 64-68 mph, curveball has 2-to-8 shape, slurve type spin, near fastball arm speed, 57-61 mph, changeup has the chance to be a plus pitch, 58-59 mph, near fastball arm speed, fading action and some sink.

Chayse Gruber 2B / 3B / Great Bend , KS / 2022

Gruber is a 5-foot-5, 140-pound, right-handed hitting second basemen and RHP in Kansas’ 2022 recruiting class. On the mound, Gruber has a smooth, fluid and athletic delivery, works with tempo, downhill, repeats, effective during game action as he is a strike thrower and forced weak contact, clean arm action from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball is 63-65 mph, arm side run, commands arm side location, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, curveball is 56-57 mph, gradual action, changeup is 51-55 mph, some sinking action.

Weston Madden RHP / 3B / Desoto, KS / 2021

Madden has a slender build and projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds and is a RHP and corner infield prospect in Kansas’ 2021 class. On the mound, Madden projects out with a good frame and athletic delivery, quick loose arm action, downhill tilt, repeats, stride slightly across body, accelerates down the mound, high three-quarter release. Fastball is heavy, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, 77-81 mph, arm side run, changeup is 73-74 mph, near fastball arm speed, arm side run, occasional sink, curveball has a chance to be plus pitch, 11-to-5 action, late sharp bite, 63-67 mph.

Walker Mann 3B / SS / Lee Summit West, MO / 2021

Mann is a 5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting infielder and RHP in Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class. On the mound, Mann’s delivery starts smooth and controlled then gets more aggressive as he moves down the mound, ducks head, over the top release. Fastball sat 71-75 mph and topped at 76 mph, occasional arm side run, curveball was sharp with late downward action, 12-to-6 shape, 59-63 mph, has a chance to be a plus pitch as he continues to develop.

 

Noble Oxford OF / 3B / Rockhurst, MO / 2021

Oxford is a 5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder and RHP is Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class. On the mound, smooth delivery with rhythm, works a quicker tempo, repeats, clean arm action, three-quarter release, deceptive, kept hitters off balance during game action with a fastball / curveball mix. Fastball is 66-71 mph, topped at 72 mph, thrown to both sides of the plate for strikes, arm side run, curveball is 57-59 mph, 11-to-5 shape, mostly gradual action but sharp at times, changeup is 63-64 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Jackson Russell 2B / RHP / Belton , MO / 2022

Russell is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder and RHP is Missouri’s 2022 recruiting class. On the mound, Russell has a smooth compact delivery, creates downhill tilt, clean loose arm action, hides the ball the well, three-quarter release, accelerates down the mound. Fastball is 71-76 mph, arm sides run, thrown for strikes, commands arm side part of the plate, curveball is 61-63 mph, gradual action.

Jonah Sarabia RHP / 1B / Battle , MO / 2021

Sarabia has a lean build at 6-foot-1, 150-pounds and is a right-handed hitting corner infield and RHP in Missouri’s 2021 class. On the mound, Sarabia has an athletic delivery, fluid actions, downhill tilt, raw and projectable frame, loose arm action, high three-quarter release. Fastball is 71-76 mph, arm side run, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, occasional sink, will turn it over for more sink and run at 68-69 mph with his 2 seam, curveball is 59-64 mph, 11-to-5 shape, gradual action, near fastball arm speed, shows potential to be a plus pitch as he continues to develop.

Jake Sawyer RHP / OF / Blue Valley West, KS / 2021

Sawyer has a lean build with a projectable frame at 6-foot, 155-pounds and is a left-handed hitting outfielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2021 class. On the mound, Sawyer has a tall and fall delivery, directional with home plate, good downhill tilt, loose arm action, high three-quarter release, repeats. At the event, fastball is 72-74 mph, arm side run, occasional sink, curveball is 58-62 mph, 11-to-5 shape, gradual action, changeup has a chance to be a plus pitch, near fastball arm speed, fading action, 64-67 mph. During game action, Sawyer effectively kept hitters off balance by throwing all three pitches for a high percentage of strikes.

 

Taylor Warren SS / RHP / Blue Springs , MO / 2021

Warren is an athletic middle infield and right-handed pitching prospect in Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class. On the mound, Warren works from a hybrid delivery in the windup, quick tempo with some effort, accelerates down the mound, in line stride, falls off to first base occasionally, over the top release, showed a fastball / curveball mix in game action. Fastball is 65-72 mph, occasional cut, thrown for strikes, curveball is 59-62 mph, 12-to-6 shape, mostly gradual action.

Adam Young RHP / C / Olathe South, KS / 2021

Young has a lean build and projectable athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. On the mound, Young has a smooth delivery with some rhythm, repeats, works downhill, long and clean arm action, over the top arm slot. At the event, fastball was 69-73 mph, thrown to both sides of the plat, produced some ground balls, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, mostly gradual action but sharp at times, near fastball arm speed, 60-65 mph.
