KS Uncommitted Spotlight: TJ Coats

This Fall PBR will be highlighting some of the top uncommitted players in the 2023 and 2024 classes. Today we take an in-depth look at 2023 CIF/RHP TJ Coats. The Blue Valley Southwest has made as big a jump as any in the state over the last 5-6 months. Always known for his physically power right-handed bat, Coats has continued to polish his game and blossomed into an impressive two-way prospect. Offensively, Coats is still a threat to leave the yard on any swing, but has made strides defensively which should allow him to stay on an infield corner at the next level. On the mound, Coats his been impressive showing a fastball in the the 90s this fall paired with a late breaking curveball.

Scouting Report

Body: 6-1, 195-pounds. Physical and mature frame with present strength
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with an upright posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a flat barrel angle.  Quick weight stack onto the back leg and utilizes a quick two tap stride with good rhythm and front foot getting down early.  Maintains balance and posture well throughout the swing. Has good overall bat speed and hands work quickly through the zone.  Short routes to the ball with hands working hard to the inside part of the ball.  Line drive approach and utilizes the middle of the field well.
Power: 95.6 max exit velocity, averaged 80.4 mph. 350’ max distance. Has good strength at contact with some leverage.
Arm: RH.  INF - 86 mph.  High 3/4 arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.
Defense:  pop times. Attacks the ball with lateral routes and active feet.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with a feel for glove action and soft hands.  Shows good lateral range.  Good ability to change arm slots when the play dictates it.
Run: 7.19 runner in the 60.

 Body: 6-1, 195-pounds. Physical and mature frame with present strength
 Delivery: Quick drop step footwork around the rubber into an easy pivot foot.  Works to a mid high balance point with weight slightly leaning forward at the top of the delivery.  Works from the middle of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum headed to the plate.  Long stride with good extension with body rotating hard off the plant leg.
 Arm Action: RH.
 FB: T86.57, 83.11-85.94 mph. Good driving action with command to the glove side. T2166, 2054 average rpm.
 SL: 70.77-74.33 mph. Feel for spin with heavy east-west shape. T2191, 2064 average rpm.
