Kansas Fall Prospect Games: Catching Reports

PBR Kansas hosted the KS Fall Prospect Games showcase at Kansas State University that featured 33 players from all across the state with players in the 2022 class to the 2025 class. Today we take a look at the 8 catchers that attended the event and their in-depth reports breaking down their frames, swing mechanics pre pitch and through contact, arm strength readings, pop times, and 60's with data inserted from BP rounds collected by Trackman.   Full event stats and details from the event can be found by clicking here.

 

Deacon Pomeroy, Shawnee Heights (KS), 2025
Positional Profile: C/3B High follow in the 2024 class with advanced tools and high potential with size and frame.
Body: 6-3, 205-pounds. Advanced and athletic frame with present strength and projectable build
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an athletic posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a relaxed back elbow.  Strong weight shift into the lower half with a quick two tap stride and linear path with the lower half.  Works into a firm front leg.   Hands work quickly through the zone and shows good overall bat speed.  Direct routes to the ball with hands working to the inner half of the ball.  Keeps head behind contact well and gets good extension.  Long levered swing.  Maintains balance and athleticism throughout the swing.
Power: 96.8 max exit velocity, averaged 84.36 mph. 349’ max distance. Advanced strength for age with very good strength at contact and true power potential.
Arm: RH. C - 76 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short and quick arm action. 
Defense: 1.94-2.00 pop times. Works aggressively out of the crouch with good hips and feet. Throws had very good carry and accuracy to the bag with clean exchanges out of the glove.  Strong receiver with pitch framing skills and strong wrists.  Shows solid blocking technique with an upright posture and good recovery skills.
Run: 7.45 runner in the 60.

 

Drew Wardell, Maize (KS), 2022 Pratt CC Commit
Positional Profile: C/3B
Body: 6-0, 190-pounds. Athletic and physical build with present strength
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance and an upright posture.  Hands get set at shoulder height with a relaxed back elbow and 45 degree bat angle.  Short weight stack onto the back leg and simple stride into a firm front leg.  Lower half works rotationally around the back foot. Uphill bat path with good overall bat speed and quick hands working through the zone.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch.  Tries to work the ball up in the air.  Slight lean back in posture after contact.
Power: 92.7 max exit velocity, averaged 82.06 mph. 276’ max distance. Has some strength at contact with the hands.
Arm: RH. C - 74 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a short and quick arm action.
Defense: 1.97-2.09 pop times. Receives the ball with good posture and a feel for pitch framing.  Good blocking technique with a good recovery.  Shows clean exchanges out of the glove with quick feet coming out of the crouch on throws to second.  When body is in sync the throws have good carry and accuracy to the bag.
Run: 7.93 runner in the 60. 

Jacob Dickey, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2023
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 6-2, 215-pounds. Physical and mature frame with present strength
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with an upright posture.  Hands get set just below shoulder height with slight arm bar posture and a vertical bat angle.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with short linear direction in the lower half.  Uses a simple stride with good rhythm and hits off a firm front leg. Hands work quickly through the zone and shows good overall bat speed.  Gets barrel moving quickly and early into the zone with strong rotational acceleration.  Rotational path with the hands with a flat bat path.
Power: 95.22 max exit velocity, averaged 72.71 mph. 308’ max distance. Strength at contact with the hands.
Arm: RH. C - 73 mph.  OF - 80 mph. Over the top arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.04-2.17 pop times. Receives the ball with strong wrists and a high posture.  Feet and shoulders turn in unison on throws to second and when in sync the throws have good carry to the bag.  High posture on blocks.  In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball out in front of the glove side leg with some glove action and a firm glove.  Utilizes a shuffle crow hop technique with slight momentum headed towards target.
Run: 7.48 runner in the 60.

Hunter Henderson, Augusta  (KS), 2022
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 6-0, 190-pounds. Physical build with present strength
Hit: RHH. Neutral stance with a slightly upright posture.  Hands get set early and quietly into position at shoulder height with a vertical bat angle.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with a quick two tap stride to a wider base.  Short linear direction with the lower half working to a firm front leg. Hands work rotationally through the zone with a short and compact swing.  Slight uphill bat path and a line drive approach.  Gets barrel moving quickly through the zone early with strong rotational acceleration.
Power: 92.75 max exit velocity, averaged 78.45 mph. 262’ max distance. Shows some strength at contact.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a quick and clean arm action.
Defense: 2.00-2.07 pop times. Receives the ball with good posture and a feel for pitch framing with loose wrists.  Works quickly out of the crouch on throws to second base with clean exchange out of the glove.  Solid blocking technique with a slightly upright posture.
Run: 7.73 runner in the 60. 

Boston Bruce, Atchison (KS), 2024
Positional Profile: 2B/C
Body: 5-7, 143-pounds. Lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future
Hit: RHH. Open stance with an athletic posture.  Works hands back at shoulder height with a high back elbow and slightly wrapped bat angle.  Quick leg kick stride with slight scissor kick finish with the lower half into a firm front leg. Hands work rotationally around the ball with a pullside approach.  Gets barrel into the zone quickly and stays on plane well with the pitch.
Power: 86.3 max exit velocity, averaged 82.17 mph. 312’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph. INF - 76 mph.  High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 1.90-2.04 pop times. Behind the plate shows quick transfers out of the glove with explosive feet and hips coming out of the crouch.  Throws had good carry and accuracy to the bag.  Strong receiving skills and shows good posture on blocks.  In the infield attacks the ball with active feet and lateral routes around the ball.  Clean exchanges out of the glove with a feel for glove action and soft hands.
Run: 7.83 runner in the 60. 

Logan Harley Smith, Shawnee Mission South (KS), 2024
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-9, 140-pounds. Lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance with an athletic posture.  Hands get set just above shoulder height with a 45 degree bat angle.  Quick weight shift into the lower half with a simple stride slight scissor kick action with the back foot. Linear routes with the hands and utilizes the middle of the field well.  Level bat path and a line drive approach.
Power: 80.36 max exit velocity, averaged 71.28 mph. 224’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 69 mph. INF - 73 mph.  High 3/4 arm slot with a short arm action.
Defense: 2.11-2.26 pop times. Behind the plate receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and a firm glove.  Pre turns body on throws to second with quick feet out of the crouch and an average release.  Throws had good carry to the bag.  In the infield likes to let the ball come to him with direct routes and short and choppy footwork.  Shows some glove action and soft hands.  Clean exchanges out of the glove.
Run: 8.12 runner in the 60.

Jackson Harding, Leavenworth (KS), 2024
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-9, 160-pounds. Proportional build with room for added strength and size in the future
Hit: RHH. Starts with a narrow base and neutral stance.  Hands get set quietly into position with a vertical bat angle.  Quick loads the weight into the back leg with lower half working linearly through the zone.  Short leg kick stride with some rhythm synced up with the hands. Slight uphill bat path and a line drive approach.  Utilizes the whole field well.  Attacks the ball out in front of the plate with good extension.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch.
Power: 84.08 max exit velocity, averaged 75.65 mph. 277’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 69 mph.   3/4 arm slot with a straight pull back out of the glove and clean release.
Defense: 2.03-2.19 pop times. Receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and a feel for pitch framing.  Pre turns body on throws to second with feet and exchange working well in sync.  Throws had good carry and accuracy to the bag. Shows good posture on balls in dirt and quick recovery. 
Run: 8.33 runner in the 60.

Owen Reinert, Blue Valley (KS), 2023
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 5-11, 165-pounds. Proportional build with room for added strength and size in the future
Hit: RHH. Starts with a neutral stance and upright posture with a narrow base.  Hands get set quietly into position with bat resting on the shoulder.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with leg kick stride and good separation between the lower and upper half.   Hands work flat through the zone with a line drive approach.  Slight lean back in the posture at contact.  Developing bat speed and hand strength.
Power: 78.76 max exit velocity, averaged 71.44 mph. 251’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 66 mph.   High 3/4 arm slot with a clean and quick arm action.
Defense: 2.00-2.13 pop times. Behind the plate shows clean and quick exchanges on throws to second with good feet and shoulder turn.  Throws had good carry and accuracy to the bag.  Receives the ball with high posture and stiff glove.  Shows solid blocking technique with hip flexibility.
Run: 8.32 runner in the 60.
