The Kansas high school baseball season has kicked off. Over the next several weeks,  we’ll be publishing our team spotlights during the 2021 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications. Perennially, we’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team analysis.

TOP PLAYERS

Ben Kudrna RHP / RHP / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2021

The number one ranked player in the State and top 50 player in the country, the LSU commit will be the guy the Timberwolves will rely on to be the anchor of the pitching staff.  Ben attacks hitters with a power fastball and sharp downward breaking curveball to go along with an above average change up.

Cal Kilgore C / SS / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2021

The projected opening day catcher and New Mexico State commit will be tasked with providing offense at the top of the lineup this Spring.  Cal has shown consistent pop times below the 2.0 range and has a loose swing with some bat speed from the right side of the plate.

Cooper Kelly SS / 2B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2022

The switch hitting Junior SS and University of Kansas commit will be the guy that anchors the defense in the middle of the diamond and should provide a high level of offense from the middle of the order.  Cooper has a smooth stroke from both sides of the plate and shows advanced defensive skills as well.

Carson Hornung SS / 3B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2021

The uncommitted Senior will look to be the opening day 3B for the Timberwolves in 2021.  Carson has a physically impressive frame and shows some potential power with the bat.

Ben Bybee RHP / 1B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2022

The 2nd ranked player in the State and top 150 player in the country, the University of Arkansas commit will be counted on to bring a lot of offense in the middle of the order as well as log some important innings on the mound.  Ben has a very projectable body with even more room to fill out in the future which could bring more power both on the mound and at the plate.

Mason Holton 3B / RHP / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2021

The Fort Hayes State commit is a guy the coaching staff is counting on to provide depth and log some important innings to the pitching staff this upcoming Spring.

Tristen Everard OF / OF / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2021

The uncommitted Senior and projected center fielder and lead off hitter will be in charge of getting the offense rolling for the Timberwolves in 2021.  Tristen has good speed and uses his long levered swing to provide consistent contact and good extension through the ball.

OUTLOOK

The Timberwolves coaching staff believes the strengths of this 2021 team are their pitching and their ability to defend.  With multiple high level prospects on both the mound and up the middle of the diamond, the Timberwolves will create some serious problems for the opponents this Spring.

The biggest question marks coming into the season is the amount of offensive production they will be able to get early on in the season.  They have numerous players that have the skill set to create an impressive lineup and with the starting pitching they have they should have some time to get up to speed quickly.
