MOKAN Preseason All-State: LHP Anaylis

The MOKAN Preseason All-State Showcase took place on Feb. 14th  at the state of the art MacNSeitz  indoor facility in Kansas City, MO. A full event of 120 players including many of the top players from each class (especially the underclassmen) showed out with some eye popping numbers. Today, we start our in-depth analysis of each player at the event with an in-depth look at the left-handed pitchers from the event. 

LHPs

Sam Cloud LHP / OF / Shawnee Mission North, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: LHP

Body: 5-foot-9, 155 pound frame with more room to add strength and size in the future.

Delivery: Works exclusively out of the stretch.  Closes front-side shoulder to create more angles into RHH and away from LHH.  Cups ball at the top of the backside.  Works well directionally down the mound with good balance.

Arm Action: LH.  Straight over the top arm slot with a long release.

FB: 75-77 mph,  slight cutting action more and works more towards glove side.

CB: 62-63 mph, short 1/7 action with fastball arm speed.

CH:66-69 mph, very slight cut action with decent downward fade.

 

Hudson Day 1B / LHP / Blue Valley West, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: 1B/LHP

Body: 6-foot-3, 165 pound lean and wiry frame with room for added strength. 

Hit: LHH.  At the plate shows a simple set up with the hands and a traditional stride that gets to neutral.  Crouches upper half down and over the plate.  Flat bat path and rotational finish with bat whipping through the zone.  Bat speed and hand strength are both developing tools. 

Power: 72 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: LH.  INF-66 mph.  ¾ arm slot with long on the backside and short on the release

Defense: In the infield showed active feet and ability to cover some ground.  Glove action and softer hands are both in development.

Run: 4.43 runner from home to first.


Delivery: Works exclusively out of the stretch position.  High leg lift to balance point and lower hand set.  Works directionally down the mound towards the plate.  Repeats the delivery well. 

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with long arm action and release.

FB: 66-69 mph, mostly straight action with a little tilt.

SL: 62-64 mph, short action with developing spin.

CH: 60-62 mph, slight cutting action with developing command. 

 

Carter DeGondea LHP / OF / Raymore Peculiar, MO / 2022

Positional Profile: LHP

Body:  6-foot, 163-pound athletic frame with room for more size and strength. 

Delivery: Slow tempoed delivery with good rhythm.  Does a good job of repeating the delivery.  Closes front shoulder off creating tough angles into RHH and away from LHH.  Gets to mid height balance point and gets going down the mound quickly.  Gets good extension down the mound and lands directionally towards the plate.  Intriguing left-handed arm that projects very well with added strength and size.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with short arm action on the glove break and longer release.

FB: 84-86 mph, tons of life with good horizontal movement back to the arm side. 

SL: 68-72, sweeping 2/7 shape with developing spin and good command. 

CH: 68-69 mph, very good hand speed and sell on the pitch.  Great fading action and plus command.

 

Nick Fincher LHP / 1B / Blue Valley, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: LHP

Body: 6-foot-2, 190-pound mature frame with room to fill out even more with future strength development. 

Delivery: Deliberate tempo with a mid-height balance point.  Keeps hands very low on the hand break and brings arm back behind the body.  Hides the ball well.  Lands closed off with an upright posture.  Back foot drags behind the body through the release.

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with very short arm action on the back side.

FB: 72-76 mph, mostly straight action with some that slightly cut and some that slightly fade to the arm side. 

SL: 70-72 mph, very flat depth with 3/9 shape and cutting action.

CH: 65 mph, good fading action with good command. 

 

Brooks Jones LHP / OF / Lawrence, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: LHP/OF

Body: 6-foot-2, 190-pound athletic frame with long limbs and room for added strength and size.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Floating hands that get set just below the shoulder height.  Two-tap stride with shorter stride length.  Rhythmic swing with good hand separation.  Explosive hand speed and very good rotational acceleration.  Uses long levered swing to his advantage and has current strength at contact with exit speeds up to 94 mph in the BP session.  Projects for future raw power with continued experience and added strength.

Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: LH.  OF-86 mph.  Over the top arm slot with long/clean arm action and release. 

Defense: In the outfield shows smooth/short steps when attacking the ball.  Shows a feel for glove action and fielding the ball in a good position out in front of the body.  Good crow hop technique with consistent rhythm and control of the body.

Run: runner from home to first.


Delivery: Smooth delivery with consistent feet and balance point.  Stiff balance point with weight-leaning forward.  Works down the mound directly towards the plate.  Hand break is consistent at mid chest level.   

Arm Action:  High ¾ arm slot with shorter arm action on the back and long release.

FB: 82-84 mph, heavy arm side run with good spin rate and developing command.  

SL: 75 mph, short cutting action with good hand speed.

CH: 75-79 mph, some arm side fade and slight downward action. 

 

Ian Luce OF / LHP / Manhattan, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 5-foot-11, 170-pound lean and athletic frame with room for added strength.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and hands set a shoulder height with a high back elbow.  Attacks with a vertical bat angle and rotational swing.  Leg kick/gather stride that gets back to neutral and even weight balance.  Lots of rhythm with the hands.  Line drive approach and shows some real strength at contact with exit speeds up to 92 mph in the BP session. 

Power:  82 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: LH.  OF-83 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with short arm action on the backside and longer release.

Defense:  In the outfield shows attacking rhythm with smooth feet.  Good crow hop mechanics and good exchanges.  Shows a feel for glove action and has good body control. 

Run: 4.56 runner from home to first.


Delivery: Rocker-step smooth delivery.  Repeats well.  Coils with front hip and shoulders at balance point creating interesting angles.  Stride foot lands closed and towards first base side to get arm working across the body. 

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with short arm action out of the glove and clean release.

FB: 80-82 mph, heavy arm side run and life at the top of the zone. 

CB: 68-71 mph, short 1/7 shape with developing spin.

CH: 76 mph, some fade with good command. 

 

Brayden Metcalf SS / RHP / Gardner Edgerton, KS / 2024

Body: 5-foot-11, 150 pound developing frame with room to add strength.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a very upright stance and feet close together.  Sinks into lower half and drives the lower half forward with a standard stride.  Flat bat angle.  Level bat path and finishes with a lower release.  Line drive approach.  Bat speed and hand strength are still developing.

Power:  77 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph.  ¾ arm slot with arm working across the chest at release.

Defense:  In the infield shows active feet with routes working around the ball.  Clean exchanges and gets ball out of the glove quick.  Shows a developing feel for glove action.

Run: 4.33 runner from home to first.


Delivery: Pitched exclusively with the left hand.  Works exclusively out of the stretch.  Quick tempoed rhythm with high balance point and slight coil.  Works directionally down the mound with good balance.

Arm Action: LH.  High ¾ arm slot with cross body action on the back side.

FB: 72-74 mph,  straight action with some life at the top of the zone.

CB: 55-59 mph, big-loopy action with 11/5 shape.

CH: 67-69 mph, slight fade to arm side.

 

Davis Nielson OF / LHP / Olathe South , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 6-foot, 170-pound lean and athletic frame with room for added strength and size.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly upright stance and hand set below shoulder height and close to the body.  Uses a leg kick gather and stride with good balance.  Lower half works linearly through the swing.  Has very good bat speed and body control.  Uses the whole field well with a line drive approach and real strength at contact.  

Power: 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: LH.  OF-80 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a short arm action on the backside and long release.

Defense: In the outfield shows attacking feet to the ball with good rhythm.  Shows a feel for glove action and fields the ball out in front of the body off the glove side leg.  Uses a shuffle technique for the crow hop.

Run: 4.40 runner from home to first.


Delivery: Works exclusively out of the stretch.  Smooth tempo to balance point.  Kicks stride foot out before foot strike.  High glove side with slight shoulder tilt upwards.  Repeats the delivery well.

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with clean arm action. 

FB: 77-80 mph, slight arm side run with some life at the top of the zone. 

CB: 60-67 mph, 12/6 shape with good downward break. 

CH: 69-71 mph, strong fade to arm side with low spin rate and developing command.

 

Isaac Stanley LHP / OF / St. James Academy, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 5-foot-8, 155 pound slim and developing frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Slow load into the backside with a short and narrow two tap stride.  Starts with a vertical bat angle and works a rotational bat path.  Pull side approach.  Hand strength and bat speed are still developing. 

Power: 73 mph exit velocity from the tee. 

Arm: LH.  OF-79 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with long and clean arm action.

Defense: In the outfield shows attacking feet with good rhythm.  Fields the ball outside the glove side leg with good glove action and soft hands.  Uses a shuffle crow hop and has very clean exchanges.  Pulls down on the throws for good trajectory. 

Run: 4.01 runner from home to first.


Delivery: Smooth up beat tempo into strong balance point.  Repeats the delivery well.  Picks up pace after hand break.  Above average effort and gets the most out of his arm.  Finishes directionally down the mound towards the plate with a balanced finish.  Projects well with quick arm. 

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with clean arm action and good hand speed.  

FB: 78-79 mph, Lots of arm side run with short extension and good command. 

CB: 68-69 mph, early break with developing feel and spin. 

CH: 72-74 mph, downward fade with good hand speed.
