Players of the Week: Austin Hansen and Brylie Ware

We’ve had a couple of close calls this season trying to decide between two exceptional Player of the Week nominees but have always found a slight advantage for one candidate over the other – not this week, however.  Two very talented class of 2015 prospects put in performances this week that they will likely remember for a long, long time.

It seems like each week Shawnee Mission East has one or more legitimate player of the week nominees from their very potent line-up (and pitching staff, for that matter).  When we’ve seen them this spring they have rolled out a two-three-four in their line-up that physically resembles that of an MLB team in Gunnar Troutwine, Trey Austin and Joey Wentz.  In addition, they have athletes at the top and the bottom of the order as well as a left-right balance in their line-up that is rare for a high school team.  Not much fun for opposing pitchers normally.

Well, apparently Austin Hansen didn’t get the memo.  Last Tuesday night the Olathe Northwest junior right-hander dialed in a seven-inning complete game shutout versus East - surrendering just three hits while striking out 13 batters.  At the plate in that game, he reached base three times going 2-for-3 with a walk and also stole a base.  There is your first Co-Player of the Week.

While Hansen was carving up hitters in Kansas City Brylie Ware was down in Central Kansas doing his best impression of Bam-Bam. The Sedgwick junior shortstop went 14-for-18 at the plate with six doubles, two triples, two home runs, 17 runs scored, 13 RBI, four HBP’s, two walks and three stolen bases.  In addition, Ware went 2-0 on the mound giving up just three hits and no earned runs over eight innings while striking out 18 batters.  That’s your second Co-Player of the Week.
