The Barn Scout Day: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Kansas held the The Barn Scout Day at The Barn Indoor Facility on January 26. Over forty-five players attended in the 2020 to 2024 classes

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a 
ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on ScoutPlus.

Here is a closer look at the Catchers from the event, listed in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Torin Cavanaugh RHP / C / Chapman, KS / 2022

Cavanaugh is a lean 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2022 class.  He ran a 4.34 home to first and had a 66 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with open stance, minimal load, in line stride, quick hands, hits with leverage in lower half, high finish in hands, middle to pull side line drives, has feel for barrel.  Behind the plate, 74 mph positional velocity, thin set up in lower half, short jab step with right foot, over the top arm slot, clean transfer. 

Rockleigh Dawson C / 1B / St Pius X, TX / 2020

Dawson is a well-built 6-foot 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Texas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.42 home to first and has a 78 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with an open stance, minimal load with no wasted movement, hits against a firm front side, level path with some length, swing produced mostly middle to pull side line drives.  Behind the plate, 76 mph positional velocity, sits low in a slightly staggered position, clean and quick transfer, over the top release, feet are on time with exchange and release, ball has carry. 

Owen Goode C / 1B / Manhattan, KS / 2024

Goode is a 5-foot-8 130-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2024 class.  He ran a 5.22 home to first and has a 67 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, tall set up, some rhythm in hands pre-pitch, shot stride, sometimes open, level path, middle to pull side contact.  Behind the plate, slightly staggered in feet, soft hands, quick transfer, over the top arm slot, 56 mph positional velocity.

Mcgwyre Leathers C / 3B / Rossville , KS / 2022

Leathers is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2022 class.  He ran a 4.55 home to first and has a 75 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts in a tall and square position in lower half, short in line stride, loads hands, quick hands with level path through hitting zone, finishes with high hands, quick tempo to swing, middle to pull side line drives.  Behind the plate, 63 mph positional velocity, athletic set up, high three quarters arm slot, fluid transfer on time with footwork.

Kevin Mannell RHP / C / Jefferson West , KS / 2021

Mannell is an athletically built 6-foot-2 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 4.34 home to first and had an 81 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, Mannell has an open stance, some rhythm in his hands as he loads with a weight shift, stride stays in line, hands manage the barrel showing range, gap to gap line drives, sprays ball to all fields with barrels awareness.  Behind the plate, 78 mph positional velocity, thin set up, slightly staggered, high exchange with short release, creates momentum to second base, over the top arm slot, receives the ball with quiet body. Will continue to fill out physically with athletic build.

Tylar Pere C / RHP / Manhattan, KS / 2022

Pere is a 5-foot-10 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2022 class.  He ran a 4.40 home to first and had an 88 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced stance, smooth and controlled load with toe tap, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, lands slightly closed, quick hands, loose and accelerated, middle to pull side contact, flashes power.  Behind the plate, 75 mph positional velocity, starts in an off-set base, soft hands to receive, quick jab set with footwork, on time with clean transfer and short over the top release, loose and quick arm action.

Gus Renter 3B / C / Manhattan , KS / 2024

Renter is a 5-foot-9 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2024 class.  He ran a 4.58 home to first and had a 74 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced set up, short in line stride, reverse toe tap before stride, short to contact, high one handed finish, middle to opposite field contact.  Behind the plate, 61 mph positional velocity, thin set up, clean catch and throw, over the top arm slot.

Jackson Radi SS / C / Manhattan , KS / 2024

Radi is a 5-foot-4 127-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2024 class.  He ran a 4.78 home to first and has a 71 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced set up, gathers weight with a controlled toe tap, in line stride, level path, minimal hand movement, middle of the field approach.  Behind the plate, 57 mph positional velocity, three-quarters arm slot, balanced set up in base, clean transfer.

Jake Wolcott SS / RHP / Manhattan, KS / 2024

Wolcott is a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2024 class.  He ran a 4.76 home to first and had a 78 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with a tall and open stance, creates smooth pre-swing rhythm, controlled in line stride, middle of the field approach, high finish in hands.  Behind the plate, 66 mph positional velocity, sits low, receives the ball with soft hands, fluid transfer, over the top arm slot, short arm circle, fluid footwork, creates momentum throw.  Projection in build.
