KY College Prospect Showcase: Outfield Analysis

On Saturday, January 17, prospects from all parts of the state showcased their abilities at the Kentucky College Showcase at Legends Sports Academy in Louisville.  Today we continue our analysis of players who attended the event. 

The following is a look at the group of outfielders in attendance.  This is position player analysis only.  Those players who also pitched at the event will have their pitching evaluations featured in a subsequent article.

Cam Hill, OF/SS, L/R, Scott County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect with athletic frame who continues to show strength gains, quick-twitch athlete, left-handed hitter hits from an open stance, short stride, short path to the ball with quick hands,
middle of the field approach, goes the other way well, flashes gap power, 86 mph exit velocity, showed speed with 4.24 home to first time.  Defensively, attacks and plays through the ball aggressively with athletic actions, big time arm strength at 94 mph from the outfield.  As an infielder, has soft hands, fluid footwork, good body control with the ability to throw on the move from different arm angles, 86mph arm strength. Hill continues to show why he is one of the top players in Kentucky.

Aidan Elias, OF, R/R, Sayre HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect with significant room to fill in frame, right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares front side with a short stride, swing is easy and loose, hands stay inside the ball well on the inner half, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, shows occasional gap power, showed bat speed with 87 mph exit velocity, good speed with 4.47 home to first base time.  Plays through the ball with athletic actions, clean exchange, 85 mph arm strength, frame and tools project well at the next level.

John Millay, OF, R/R, Meade County HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with lean/athletic frame, right-handed hitter starts in a balanced stance, loads back with a big leg kick trigger, foot gets down late at times, ball jumps off barrel when he squares it up, line drive type hitter with occasional gap power, showed a big increase in exit velocity at 88 mph (78 last summer), 4.55 home to first base time.  Defensively, plays through the ball well with athletic actions, fluid feet, clean exchange, high 3/4 release, 84 mph arm strength (86 at previous event), solid 2016 prospect.

Jarrod Benningfield, OF, L/R, Trinity HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect, athletic frame with broad shoulders, left-handed hitter hits from an open stance, squares front side with a short stride, uses lower half, line drive type hitter, shows ability to go the other way, shows some bat speed, 85 mph exit velocity, 4.70 home to first time.  Defensively, plays though the ball, quick/clean exchange, long arm action, over the top release, 79 mph arm strength.

Chandler Lynn, OF, R/L, Larue County HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect with lean and athletic frame, right-handed hitter hits from a very wide and crouched stance, likes the ball on inner half, shows some quickness in hands, flat bat path, line drive type hitter, flashes occasional gap power, showed some bat speed with 86 mph exit velocity, 4.75 home to first base time. Defensively, attacks the ball aggressively and plays through with a two-handed approach, long arm action, over the top release, 73 mph arm strength.

Devin Bishop, OF, R/R, South Oldham HS, 2017
5-foot-7, 135-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a wide base with minimal stride, has made adjustments in shortening up his swing, shows some quickness in hands, lacks some extension through contact, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, showed big increase in exit velocity at 78 mph (72 previous event), showed good speed with 4.32 home to first base time.  Defensively, plays through the ball, has a big crow hop, showed a big increase in arm strength at 77 mph (68 at previous event), has shown significant improvement in all areas of game since last fall.

Andrew Louden, OF/LHP, L/L, Ryle HS, 2016
6-foot, 145-pound prospect with lean, athletic frame, left-handed hitter hits from a spread stance with no stride, minimal load, hands are set high and drop some to trigger swing, middle to opposite field approach, line drive type hitter, 72 mph exit velocity, 4.70 home to first time.  Plays through the baseball at times but can do it more consistently, long arm action, high-3/4 release, 77 mph arm strength, shows some athleticism.

Zachary Blumeier, OF/IF, RHP, R/R, St. Xavier HS, 2017
6-foot, 145-pound prospect, right-handed hitter works from a balanced stance, short stride, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, 72 mph exit velocity, 4.75 home to first base time, has some offensive tools that should continue to develop with additional strength.  Defensively, has a two-handed approach to the ball on the ground in the outfield, clean exchange, 73 mph arm strength from high-3/4 release.  As an infielder, moves well laterally, average footwork, hands work, 73 mph arm across the infield.

Bryce Barber, OF, R/R, North Oldham HS, 2017
5-foot-9, 164-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance, short stride, maintains good balance through swing, gets lower half involved, good extension through contact, line drive type contact with gap to gap approach, shows good potential as a hitter, 79 mph exit velocity, 4.87 home to first time.  Defensively, can attack and play through the ball more aggressively, long arm action, high-3/4 release, 76 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Jordan Browning, OF, R/R, Henry Clay HS, 2016
5-foot-8, 145-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance, short stride, shows good balance, hands are loose, level swing path, line drive type hitter, likes to work the middle of the field, 79 mph exit velocity, posted a 4.73 home to first base time. Defensively, plays through the ball well, solid footwork, high-3/4 release, 76 mph arm strength from the outfield.
