Player Spotlight: Warren Central 2016 RHP Josh Floyd Shows Velocity Jump

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

Earlier this week, we featured the velocity increases of a pair of 2016 right-handers in Jake Ziegelmeyer and Michael Higgins. Today, we continue that theme with a look at Josh Floyd.

We last saw Floyd at our Fall Prospect Games event in October. His velocity that day was exactly where wefloyd had seen it back in the summer, 81-83 mph, but with his 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame, easy-effort delivery, and clean arm action, it was apparent that there was likely more velocity to come for the Warren Central right-hander.

Below is a look at Floyd’s scouting report from that October event.

October 19, 2014 Scouting Report: 6-foot-4, 175-pound prospect with lanky frame that projects well, uses long arm action through a high ¾ slot, easy effort in delivery, stays online with lower half, good tempo in delivery, fastball sat 81-83 mph with some arm-side run and sink, works fastball at the bottom of the zone well, showed a 68-71 mph curveball with 11/5 action, gets under curveball at times leaving it up but is a solid pitch when he stays on top, allowed no hits but did struggle some with command in second inning of work, walked three and struck out two in his two innings of work, was a stretch only guy during the summer but is pitching from the windup now, has potential to see significant velocity gains.

Fast forward to last Saturday where Floyd arrived at the Preseason All-State Showcase with hopes of showing his off-season gains. He didn’t disappoint.

Displaying a loose and quick arm, Floyd’s fastball sat mostly 84-85 mph, and he touched 87 mph and 88 mph one time each. He did show some inconsistent feel for his 68-70 mph curveball, but with continued development, it has the potential to be a solid pitch at the next level. His best secondary pitch on this occasion was his 71-73 mph changeup that he threw with good arm speed as it showed some late sink and fade.
